Maui Hemp Seed Banquet and Hemp Advocacy Event

  • [01:1105:50] Introduction and Program Overview
The video opens with hosts introducing the program “Mama Presents,” produced by the Maui Arts and Music Association (MAMA). They explain the show’s purpose: to highlight the rich cultural and artistic talents of Maui, including music, artists, and community initiatives. The current episode focuses on a recent event, the first annual Maui Hemp Seed Banquet, organized at Avalon Restaurant by Mark Ellman and Susie Osborne. The banquet showcased hemp’s many uses—food, fiber, and building materials—and featured expert guest Roger Christie from the Big Island, a long-time hemp advocate. The hosts encourage viewers to support local musicians, artists, and hemp industry pioneers.
  • Maui Neutral Zone gathering promoting peace and community engagement on Maui island.[11:1114:38] Opening Blessing and Event Setting
The banquet begins with a blessing by Covington, acknowledging the earth, the healing power of hemp, and honoring those involved in organizing and supporting the event. Special thanks are given to Roger Christie, Susie Osborne (producer and hemp ambassador), Mark Ellman (chef), and the vendors showcasing hemp-related products. The blessing also includes a spiritual component honoring individuals transitioning from life. The atmosphere is one of education, celebration, and community support.
  • [14:3819:48] Event Highlights, Introductions, and Giveaway Items
Mark Ellman introduces the culinary aspect, highlighting the delicious hemp-infused dishes prepared for the banquet. Music by Ricardo, a Spanish classical guitarist who regularly plays in Kihei, accompanies the event. Susie Osborne thanks the many contributors and vendors, mentioning that attendees received gift bags containing hemp products such as wallets, cookbooks, and catalogs donated by David Stunder, a major hemp product supplier. Other donors include Richard Rose from Sharon’s Finest, providing hemp-based cosmetics and fabrics. Susie shares her personal journey with hemp activism dating back to 1992, encouraging attendees to support the local hemp industry and advocates like Roger Christie.
  • Maui Neutral Zone community event in Hawaii promoting peace and social connection.[25:2526:53] Media Coverage and Event Significance
Acknowledgment is given to Laurel Murphy for media coverage and Jason Sports for videotaping the event for public access television (Akaku). The event is framed as a milestone—the first hemp seed banquet on Maui, and among the earliest in Hawaii, following a similar event on the Big Island. Susie expresses pride in finally bringing Roger Christie to Maui after several attempts over the past three and a half years.
  • Elderly woman wearing a white hat and yellow shirt, with a man in sunglasses and a plaid shirt in a casual indoor setting, Maui Neutral Zone event.[27:3541:19] Keynote by Roger Christie: Hemp Advocacy and Legal Challenges
Roger Christie delivers a passionate speech covering multiple critical points:

    • Hemp as a sacred and divine plant with thousands of years of human use for food, clothing, shelter, fuel, and medicine in an environmentally sustainable way.
    • The event aims to transform public perception and laws surrounding hemp and marijuana, advocating peace and inclusion rather than division (“us versus them”).
    • The war on marijuana is described as a tragic mistake, with millions arrested and families affected, despite growing scientific evidence supporting hemp’s benefits.
    • Christie recounts his own legal struggles, including ongoing indictments related to hemp seed importation—highlighting the harsh federal enforcement despite the plant’s legality in many other contexts.
    • He emphasizes the importance of community support and activism to ‘get the bandwagon rolling’—noting that while some lawmakers are openly pro-hemp, many are waiting for public pressure to join the cause.
    • Maui Neutral Zone community gathering at a dining event in a cozy restaurant setting.Christie references the preamble to Hawaii’s constitution, invoking the right of Hawaiians to control their destiny, nurture their culture, and preserve quality of life, framing hemp legalization as aligned with these principles.
    • He calls on attendees to spread awareness through media, public discussions, and letters to editors to counteract decades of propaganda against hemp.
    • Roger encourages attendees to overcome fear, defining it as “False Evidence Appearing Real,” and to embrace hemp’s proven nutritional and industrial benefits.
    • He distinguishes between hemp seed consumption (nutritional) and marijuana flower use, advocating for responsible and informed use.
    • Christie predicts a hemp renaissance that will positively impact society’s culture and economy.
  • [41:1944:35] Health Benefits of Hemp Seed and Societal Context
Roger reads scientific findings on hemp seed nutrition, highlighting:

    • Hemp seeds are a rich source of globulin starting material, essential for antibody production and immune system strength.
    • Hawaii hemp festival outdoor celebration at Avalon Restaurant Lahaina Maui in 1995.The body’s ability to fight illness depends on this nutrient, which hemp seeds uniquely provide in large amounts.
    • He stresses that hemp is not optional but essential for good health, especially during times when public health and nutrition programs are being cut.
    • The event symbolizes hope for a peaceful, abundant future where hemp provides vital nutrition and materials.
    • The call to action is clear: “If not us, who? If not here, where? If not now, when?”
  • Maui Neutral Zone, peaceful protest scene in Maui with diverse group, promoting environmental awareness and community activism.[44:3546:31] Closing Ceremony and Food Presentation
The banquet concludes with desserts presented by chef Mark Ellman, including hemp seed-based dishes. Attendees receive free packets of sterilized, legal hemp seeds to take home as a symbolic and practical gesture to promote hemp cultivation and consumption. The hosts encourage sharing these seeds to raise awareness. The program Maui On A magazine, featuring hemp-related content, is distributed to attendees.
  • [46:3151:17] Closing Remarks and Participant Feedback
Maui Neutral Zone gathering promoting peace and community engagement on Maui island. The video ends with attendees expressing appreciation for the meal and the event’s organization. Plans are mentioned to host future hemp banquets at other venues, signaling ongoing momentum for the hemp movement on Maui.

26:10
thank you for being here covering the event and really being able to give us a mistake welcome to maui with roger we’re glad you could be here today reviewing the event as well as jason sports is videoing the event for akaku so anybody oh this is something that i’ve been wanting to do as they say for almost three and a half years is to bring roger christie over when we tried him over three other times two times for an ohana luncheon and once for a little camp meeting at mcc however to bring him over here for

26:53
the first hemp seed banquet ever the entire island of maui it was almost the first in the state of hawaii except the big island beat us to it a couple of years ago with their event however it’s just a real treat a genuine genuine honor for me to introduce roger who is the reason i’m a hemp activist so if it weren’t for roger i wouldn’t have planned the event with mark and put it all on so please give a very very warm now welcome to mr rogers thank you all so much thank you susie

27:35
one of the first things i’d like to do as a as an acknowledgement uh students could work on uh on maui and throughout the state and throughout the world you’d be surprised how far maui on a magazine goes and the people that read mauiana magazine and how far we all travel and spread the good word i like to present susie with a pen it’s a ham leaf pin and it’s it was designed originally by lawrence mckinney out of he’s a harvard business school graduate who created this as for the veterans of the marijuana wars

28:05
about 10 years ago and considered our generation basically we’re we are veterans of a declared war upon us and upon our culture so i want to acknowledge susie with that [Applause] hemp is the answer what’s the question thanks for coming out to support this uh this terrific event we’re celebrating the sacred and divine hemp plant that has been an inspiration to many of us for many many years uh it’s given the muse the inspiration and the munchies to uh our generation for 20 some years

28:48
and more um we’re here to turn the war on marijuana to peace plain and simple uh with our loving attitudes we can look at the hemp plant and look at those that are aligned with it and those that are aligned against it and turn those hangs of of war or us and them let’s try and get we’re trying to get rid of that us and them stuff and make everyone included in the peace and the good feeling and the good times that are coming with hemp as our helper as it’s been for thousands of years hemp has been

29:33
mankind’s number one plant prank and helper in the basics of life providing the food clothing the shelter the fuel and the medicine in an environmentally sane and ecological way we’ve just been having the first courses of the hemp seed banquet i’d like you to all join with me and taking a few deep breaths together let’s take four deep breaths yeah that’s to help our minds to help our hearts and to help ourselves at this point i’d like to make a special acknowledgement and introduction

30:37
nothing you know as we go through life and have our our successes and our failures we’ve come to find that it’s the help of our friends our intimates our family and other people in our lives that really help us do the things that we do almost nothing is done completely alone and aaron anderson is a isabella that’s here today aaron lives on the big island and aaron and i happen to have the same birthday although he appeared on planet earth 12 years before i did but we got into enough activism together

31:08
many years ago in the big island and aaron and i went to the emcee banquet in san francisco in 1991 too and we were inspired on the plane back uh we cooked up the idea of having an mc banquet right now hey let’s do it all right aaron said yeah let’s do it a quarter ton of help right away well that was a full vision and um the first 25 pound box that we had fedex in to make some trial recipes with some hemp seed bagels and other things was sniffed out by those those hounds at the federal express office and they

31:46
took the dea alarm they arrested aaron right away even though we never received the box and this was again a box of legal sterile dea approved himself aaron got arrested i went to kind of help him and confuse the effort and he said oh thanks for coming in you were arrested too so aaron and i after four years we’re still under indictment and that’s the longest legal experience i’ve heard of we’re still facing 10 years in prison in a 25 000 fine for bringing in hemp seeds and i’d

32:19
like to introduce my good buddy co-founder of the hawaiian council aaron anderson is here to support us as well it says drugs are really expensive [Applause] we come here against really enormous odds uh you can’t imagine or maybe you can imagine how many phone calls faxes meetings uh plane rides whatever as it is taken to come to this event today and to sit here in peace and in this beautiful opulent and gorgeous surroundings to be able to take deep breaths together to have this meal in peace

33:17
without you know any any harm come to anyone certainly enormous odds against us however as with many things in life or maybe with everything in life there’s more than one way to look at it eating hemp seed is a custom that’s as old as time and yet it’s newly rediscovered and here we’re enjoying it at avalon in the finest tradition we’ve all heard of the last supper well we’re calling this the first we know that the war supper marijuana is an idea whose time has gone preamble to the state constitution of

34:02
hawaii i just looked it up the other day i thought there might be some inspiration in there and there certainly is in the preamble to the constitution of hawaii it says in part quote we reserve the right to control our destiny to nurture the integrity of our people and our culture and to preserve the quality of life that we desire thank you thank you state of hawaii thank you founding fathers and mothers for putting that those beautiful words and a beautiful vision in here to inspire us still we are also the people and we do get to

34:36
nourish and to control our own destiny and make no mistake about it we’re here taking a bold and yet beautiful scan for that right right as we’re here we’re not only changing minds and attitudes about the benefits and goodness of hemp we’re working to change the state law there’s no mistake about it we want to change a law that’s that’s one of the things that keeps us from having fertile hemp seeds in our garden where they really belong as the information and understanding of

35:04
hemp changes so does the law change and that’s that’s what we’re doing today we’re transforming the evil weed into the blessed and healthy product and the plant friend that it is this is a doable project so many people say oh it’s so impossible the new world order is against us and you know this is the kali yuga this is oh god we’ll never make it out of here alive um there are only 75 lawmakers in the state of hawaii and four of them are absolutely him friendly people absolutely and there are many others

35:37
that are closet supporters of what we believe in it’s just and they tell me all the time if you’ll just get that bandwagon rolling we’ll hop on but we can’t be we just can’t get the bandwagon going you’re gonna have to do it and then we’ll help out so that’s what we’re helping to do today is get that bandwagon going in a beautiful place with an australis reputation here for good food fine dining [Music] from the big island david tardis jerry chang eric hamakawa

36:20
again he’s one of those people that once the bandwagon gets going he will hop on he wants to know yeah he wants to know that there’s more community support for it and that’s what we’re hoping to show today um when the laws against temple were made here and elsewhere none of the lawmakers or us i mean i certainly didn’t maybe i can’t make this early i can’t speak for you we didn’t know about the health benefits of hemp seed you know when they made that prohibition

36:46
they didn’t know what we know today we now have i was just showing someone that the scientific analysis the breakdown of the essential fatty acids in the hemp seeds we have that we have the history we have the science we have the evidence and now we have the personal experience to put this program forth there’s no we don’t need to do any more research you know they’re always saying well we need to study it for you know another 10 000 years well it’s been studied for 10 000 years

37:11
already it’s humankind’s history includes him back at least 12 000 years that we’ve been like we know so we can prove it it’s not so risky anymore we can prove it we’ve done the legwork um we’ve done our homework well researching folklore and databases and manuscripts for information backing our premise it’s all here available now some of the really hard part is done now we just need to spread the good news or the gospel of him around and get it in the newspaper and in our conversation and in letters to

37:46
the editor you know one of my visions is hey it’s hard to get the media and thank you laurel for being here couldn’t get the media to give us a fair shake and put this on a level playing field would it be just so easy to buy a full-page ad in the sunday paper every sunday for you know until the legislature comes in session how could they deny it at that point would it be great to get these public access tv shows uh uh on the air in a bigger way wouldn’t it be great to to get these products out in a bigger

38:13
fashion so it’s really undeniable the information against him is propaganda basically and it’s you know it hits it hits your mind when you touch the fabric this beautifully uh grand organically drawn fabric it kind of slips through in another way your sense of touch says oh this is beautiful this is soft this is strong this is elegant this is wonderful and the propaganda doesn’t have effect and as you taste hemp seed your taste buds say wow this is delicious this is surprisingly good

38:46
the propagandic it falls away and i’d just like to invite everyone to just limit that fear which i learned at church here very often stands for false evidence appearing real you know that’s what fear is a lot it’s it’s it’s made up thing and it’s not really true part of the reason we’re celebrating the feasting today is this all this good news is coming out it’s scientifically proven that we can we can you know debate with the best of them and when certainly mark and the crew at avalon

39:22
are proving that not only good for you but it’s also very delicious it’s um hemp as in life is what we make of it and what we seek into it again we know there is legitimate fear out in the community people have fears because some people have been harmed by using the implant some people have overdone it they’ve misused it we know that’s true i don’t need to to be little anybody’s experience has had a bad experience with it can be overused it can be misused however there’s another way of looking

40:14
at it and there’s this safer and saner way of using the plant that is a benefit to people who need it for medicine that need it for their spirit for faith healing for other things i’m convinced and we’re convinced that transforming the marijuana into the hemp’s the marijuana problem into the hemp solution will bring about the biggest benefit in our lifetime so far and create a virtual renaissance of culture in a society and of our generation that’s been maligned much like mr mcnamara came out recently and said

40:49
sorry the vietnam war was a terrible terrible mistake god bless him for doing that many years too late but but maybe on divine timing it’s just right well we need other people to come out and say yes so the prohibition against him and this crazy war on judge which is a war on people has been a terrible terrible mistake maybe it’s up up to us in a nice way because good manners and the best consciousness possible to relate that message to people okay this has been a tragic mistake and we’re not going to let it

41:19
happen to ourselves our friends or relatives or even people who don’t know anymore i don’t know how aware you folks are of the arrests for marijuana and hemp these things but they’re actually more arrests under president clinton than there ever have been in the past they’re arresting 1 000 of us a day for simple possession of marijuana 1 000 americans a day and this has got to stop work with normal national organization for the reform of marijuana laws is keeping track doing a great job for many years

41:54
and they say that we’re about to hit the 10 millionth u.s citizen arrested from marijuana maybe this month maybe next year up here shortly but i’d like to read you something about the importance of the healing quality of the hemp seed not not smoking him not the flowers not the buds this is from hemp seed antibodies side bar it’s a hemp researcher found out this information quote the body’s ability to resist and recover from illness depends on how rapidly it can produce massive amounts

42:36
