Summary & Transcript
The video transcript presents a vivid and heartfelt exploration of life and culture in Maui, specifically focusing on the community of Kīpahulu (often shortened to Kī). The program blends elements of musical celebration, local politics, environmental advocacy, and a deep dive into the agricultural and cultural practices of the region. It opens with an island-themed musical introduction, evoking the beauty of Maui’s beaches, trade winds, and community spirit. Then, Jason Schwarz, a Green Party candidate running for South Maui Council, discusses the importance of district voting versus at-large voting, highlighting the challenges local residents face in having their voices heard and the need for political reform to better represent Maui’s diverse communities.
The narrative then shifts to a warm, personal tour of Kīpahulu’s tropical gardens and flower farms, led by local farmer Jimmy and his family. Viewers are taken on a scenic ride through flower fields, learning about the cultivation of exotic flowers like the “sexy pink” ginger, and the challenges faced by farmers, such as water scarcity and invasive snails affecting taro crops. The episode also touches on the local culture, including traditional Hawaiian dance, handmade crafts, and family stories that connect the present to the historical past, including the 1941 tsunami (referred to as the Title Wave) that reshaped the community.
The video closes by emphasizing community resilience, environmental stewardship, and the significance of preserving local heritage and natural resources. The presenters invite viewers to appreciate the beauty, culture, and challenges of Maui while encouraging political engagement and environmental awareness.

Key Insights
- [05:44] ️ Political Representation and District Voting: Jason Schwartz’s candidacy underscores a critical issue in Maui’s political system—at-large voting dilutes the voice of local communities like South Maui. His advocacy for district voting aims to ensure council members directly represent their constituents’ specific needs, addressing disparities in political influence caused by island-wide voting. This reform could lead to more equitable resource allocation and stronger local advocacy.
- [08:08] Balancing Environment and Economy: As a Green Party candidate and local business person, Schwarz promotes an integrative approach that values environmental sustainability alongside economic viability. His leadership of the Arts and Music Association further ties cultural enrichment to environmental stewardship, suggesting that vibrant communities depend on both ecological health and cultural vitality.
- [11:34] Agriculture as Cultural Backbone: The visit to Jimmy’s tropical flower farm reveals how agriculture in Maui is intertwined with family heritage and cultural identity. The farm’s story—passed down through generations and surviving natural disasters—shows that preserving land and traditional farming methods is essential not only economically but also for maintaining community cohesion and cultural memory.
- [20:59] Innovative Farming Practices: The detailed explanation of soaking flowers in soap and water before market indicates local efforts to maintain product quality and hygiene while minimizing chemical use. This practice reflects a commitment to sustainable agriculture and community health, balancing market demands with environmental concerns.
- [38:19] Challenges from Global Market Competition: The local flower market faces significant competition from imports, especially during summer months when prices and demand drop due to cheaper flowers from Florida and the Caribbean. This economic pressure threatens small-scale farmers and stresses the need for local support and diversification of markets, including direct sales at swap meets and online orders.
- [48:00] Cultural Preservation Through Craft and Dance: The inclusion of traditional Hawaiian crafts and hula dance highlights ongoing efforts to preserve and celebrate indigenous culture. Teaching younger generations about native plants used in crafts and the cultural significance of dance helps maintain cultural continuity and fosters pride in Hawaiian identity amidst modern challenges.
- [52:57] Environmental Threats to Traditional Crops: The invasive golden apple snails pose a major threat to taro production, a staple crop deeply tied to Hawaiian culture and diet. The community’s use of ducks and mosquito fish as biological controls demonstrates innovative, eco-friendly pest management strategies. However, water scarcity exacerbates these challenges, signaling urgent need for sustainable water management to protect agriculture and cultural heritage.
- [56:56] Water Scarcity as a Critical Issue: Water shortages limit taro cultivation and threaten local food security and cultural practices. Jimmy’s prioritization of snail eradication and water restoration underscores how environmental issues are directly linked to community well-being. This highlights the broader challenge Maui faces in balancing development, environmental conservation, and sustaining traditional livelihoods.
The video serves as both a cultural celebration and a call to action—encouraging political engagement, environmental responsibility, and community solidarity to preserve the unique heritage and natural beauty of Maui.
me helloha my name is Jason Schwarz I am the Green Party candidate for Council from the South Maui seat we have residency requirements here in Maui which you all know and being that I live in South Maui I’m running in South Maui seed against Wayne Niki our present incumbent who many think including myself has done a real good job as a watchdog but we have things that we need here in Maui and I’m running and the main reason I’m running is to clarify the idea and issue of District voting
versus our at large voting now with a residency requirement for seat um without getting too much into detail about it many of you who live in different areas vote for people Islands wide you vote in Maui m and the I seats in if you have special interest in your area it’s a very big challenge to get someone in that represents your needs everyone in your area could vote for example for me if you lived in South Mali and the rest of the islands could carry based on a vote for Wayne or Helen or Robert Tanaka so how are you going to
make a change the one way is to get voting by districts that each area we vote for someone to our area and I think that’s a really important point and needs to be brought home I’m really running and hope that you will challenge all the incumbents to get District voting on the ballot in 1998 by a simple vote that they can do just between them to get it on the ballot as opposed to 20% of the signatures of all the voters in the last election which is quite a task if we put this issue to the back
burner it’s likely going to get pushed off another two years and another two years and it’s too important an issue this year we see that Dennis Nakamura who many think is one of the most most challengeable of council candidates wasn’t challenged because people I spoke to feel that by the dollars he has to support his election and the fact that you have to get known so widely without the time and money it’s a real challenge to be um bumping if you will an incumbent so we need to change in that
system or someone like sahala is running against the primary Goro hok’s son Ricky many people around the county may know the name hokama and vote hokama not really carefully understanding that they’re voting for the son they don’t really know him the people on the nine may have a very different opinion of hokama versus kah halahala how is that fair you know we talk about laai only having enough people to get part of a seat uh part of a voice but they get no voice now because of the way that voting is done
Islands wide I think that’s important enough an issue to take so much of the time that I have here with you about that um you know me as a green party member which means to many of you that I’m a strong environmentalist not a radical environmentalist someone that recognizes that environment and economy have to work together I am also the director of the Arts and Music Association promoting art music and environment we have a local television show here on this same akaku um television station we hope that
do enjoy our show we have all kinds of different guests and all kinds of people that bring a lot of different subjects to Maui we’ve had people that are healers people that are doctors people that are presidents of electric companies we’ve had all kinds of different people on to share with the people of Maui the many spectrums of our um people and ideas that are happening here on Maui and from all around the world and to all around the world many of you should pick up this simple booklet the charter of the county
of Maui in there you will see that um it’s very clear that we need to get the council to act with only a a little time before the election in the primary and then primary and then election and then 2 years and they’re running again we have to choose our time and the time is now before the election to get the council to vote to put this on the ballot for the next election so we want to focus on that and challenge all our candidates it would be my great pleasure to serve you the people of Maui if in
fact you choose to elect me and um I guess you say I’m green I’m a loan officer and I do mortgages I’m green I care about the environment I have a sense about business and numbers I also have a sense of coming from the heart and I listen to all the things around me and all the things that are said to me and then I make my own decision and um green is really an independent bridge I feel between traditional Democrats and Republicans it allows Independents and everyone to be able to vote in a new way
to take the best of all ideas and put them in something new thank you my name is Jason Schwarz I’m the green candidate for Council in South Maui Aloha this is Ariel and Jason with Mar Music Association Aloha and we have a great adventure for you today because we um had a great adventure and took you with us yeah we did riding on a back of a truck that was a good one riding on the back of a truck anyway we have a delightful adventure to a few beautiful Hawaiian families you know we go to the swap Beach each week
many of the families around here that find the prices of produce and the price of things in the market find a real strong alternative in supporting the local people through on Saturday going to the swamp meat I love that part you know you’ve seen us on uh on a little on shows before where we stop at the side of the road on our trip to Hana and Ariel is looking at the flowers well we have I guess you’d say you can see it by this beautiful girl she loves flowers and so when people come to our place

are happening out in K and I through this process we got a little to visit some of the the vendors that sometimes frequent down in the the base wasn’t that a great spot yes it’s really a beautiful beautiful place out there and the thing that I love the most about it are the stories of how the land pulled together and the families that make all this happen and you know as Jimmy will tell you how his mother left him the land at K and I and then the tidal wave came and Title Wave so people moved up
the mountain and I love um the local people and their stories and how they care about the land and move it through their families and I honor that very much and it’s wonderful to see that in here and how Jimmy is caring for this flower farm so grandson will have the farm one day and it’s very beautiful and very beautiful heart people and we were so happy to have this opportunity to bring them to you and you to them and also to be able to show you some of the things that are their challenges like
the water like the problem with the snails and the tarot uh these are things that I think we hope hope we’re doing our part to share with the people of Maui so we can search for the solutions to some of these problems and again to share the beautiful people I really enjoyed going on to Jimmy’s farm and seeing these sexy pinks these huge flowers growing naturally in fields of beautiful flowers was very very exciting and you’ll share it with us that’s okay and we’re glad to bring it to you have a

long time yes very beautiful F this is my fifth year wow five years it’s wonderful around here you know dance is something that has really been preserved around here of all the the Hawaiian culture the dance has really been applauded I’m real glad to see your mama did it too I bet right your mother she didn’t I see I was wrong I was just straight wrong is this your property too yeah yeah this is mine I own from here to the over there up here wow this is just beautiful and from that bananas over
there the bananas over there you see something or something yeah yeah and you need water here huh lot of water yeah yeah put your feet in there what were you saying that there snam SS that have been here that been oh yeah there’s snails you see that yellow snail over there loaded see you see one over there oh yeah oh inside you see and it’s been a problem huh that’s why over get Ducks you see the r ducks for eat the snails oh I see we call them mosquito fish why CU they eat the mosquitoes
no that e all the eggs before we used to have those gold fishes we still have the Chinese uh no not wiggles like a wiggle Chinese wiggle fish no they eat all that’s great so this T you can use the leaves you can the leav and the tar on the KN that’s one to make the PO which do you eat the leav the leaves uh take the leav from here you cut it here and then like how Water Crest or something like that it’s a staple of the diet for the Hawaiian people for many years you see all that gold s look at that see

want to not only keep it beautiful but see what we can figure out all of us to find ways to help bring more water here to get rid of the snail problem right all the things that we need what would you like I mean if I was going to ask you Jimmy what is it that you here in K and I really would like to see what would you say I would say that we would like to have the snails as a first priority to get it out from k i that we can drop and and then I think we can have good tarot in k i but with the snails there’s no way we can have Tarot
that’s why the PO shops today they don’t have enough po the the PO shops are crying for teror and the people here cannot give them the tarot so now before I would I would say there were about two truck of load of tarot would go out per week but now lucky if there’s five bag of tarot going out per week now wow because there’s no tarot Okay so we get to say goodbye and end this wonderful magical Disneyland Journey we are uh truly appreciative of you Jimmy and your family for letting us
