  • [00:0103:03] Opening & Introduction
The video opens with a musical segment (lyrics mentioning sunshine in your heart, family love, and encouragement to help each other). Following the music, the host, Jason, welcomes actor Richard Hatch, widely recognized for his role in Battlestar Galactica. Richard expresses his deep connection to Maui, which he calls his second home after bypassing Oahu for 30 years.

  • [03:0304:58] Acting from the Heart Workshop
Richard discusses his workshop called “Acting from the Heart”, which is an acting class designed for everyone, regardless of age or profession. The workshop focuses on:
  • Tapping into one’s authentic self
  • Overcoming fear, inhibitions, and shyness
  • Communicating and expressing from a genuine, heartfelt place
  • Helping participants find joy and accomplishment through authenticity

He emphasizes that acting is often misunderstood as artificial, but he views it as a true expression of life and connection, a way to be real on the world’s stage. People from diverse professions (lawyers, doctors, garbage men) attend because the process is inherently spiritual and transformative.

  • [04:5808:36] The Spiritual and Personal Growth Aspects of Acting
Richard shares his personal journey from being a shy child to becoming an actor and teacher. Acting helped him:
  • Expand his sense of identity
  • Reconnect with lost parts of himself
  • Gain freedom to be authentic
He explains that many people limit themselves by trying to fit in and seeking external approval. Acting breaks those boundaries by encouraging exploration of different personas and emotional realities. This process is applicable to everyone, not just professional actors.

  • Maui neutral zone, peaceful discussion between two people in a cozy home setting.[08:3612:57] Balancing Creativity, Spirituality, and Business
Richard discusses the challenges of balancing:
  • Creative and spiritual pursuits
  • The practical need to make a living and manage finances
He explains many creative people struggle financially because they disconnect from business realities. His workshops help participants:
  • Understand money as energy in action and a tool for exchange
  • Break limiting beliefs about money
  • Achieve balance between inflow and outflow to avoid debt
He advocates for creating value-based businesses that serve others and generate income in a way aligned with personal integrity.

  • [12:5716:56] The Importance of Value in Business and Giving
    Richard emphasizes:
  • Business should be a win-win exchange of value for value, not manipulation or greed
  • Giving something for free often leads to undervaluing oneself and the service/product
  • The spiritual importance of receiving as well as giving
He explains many “givers” struggle to receive, which leads to depletion and imbalance. True giving comes from a “full cup”—when you value yourself and allow energy to flow both ways.

  • [16:5621:21] Vulnerability, Self-Esteem, and Power
Richard defines vulnerability not as weakness but as a state of:
  • Taking responsibility for one’s thoughts and feelings
  • Communicating honestly and powerfully
  • Being strong without the need to dominate or manipulate
He compares this to nurturing a plant—true joy comes from nourishing and watching something grow. The process of opening the heart and embracing vulnerability leads to authentic self-esteem and personal power.

  • [21:2123:53] Personal Life & Transition to Teaching
Richard shares about his personal life:
  • He wasn’t married when he had his son, and initially felt guilt and shame for not being a present father
  • At age 12, he took his son out of private school to live with him, which became a transformative and joyful experience
  • This responsibility helped him mature from a childlike dependency to an adult taking control of his life
Transition to teaching happened when a girlfriend introduced him to an opportunity at UCLA Extension to teach an acting class. Richard highlights teaching as a natural extension of sharing life wisdom.

  • [23:5328:42] Overcoming Shyness & Embracing Risk
Richard and the host discuss his lifelong struggle with shyness and fear of performing. He says:
  • Fear is an ally that can be used positively
  • Constantly challenging oneself to do something new prevents stagnation and boredom
  • Innovation and risk-taking (manageable risks) are essential in personal and business growth
  • The thrill of stepping out of comfort zones—whether in business, acting, or life—is necessary for vitality and success

The conversation acknowledges how people often seek excitement through extreme activities to break from routine, but the same energy can be found in genuine creative challenges.

  • [28:4236:01] Workshop Experience & Group Dynamics
The host and a participant describe their experience in Richard’s workshop:
  • Exercises like simulating the “orgasm scene” from When Harry Met Sally broke down masks and barriers, encouraging deep emotional release
  • The workshop created a space of love, acceptance, and non-judgment, allowing even the most fearful participants to open up
  • Richard’s patience and mastery guide the group flow, balancing structure with allowing unexpected emotional breakthroughs
  • Sensitive issues such as sexuality and abuse emerged organically due to the openness of the exercises, showing the depth of the work beyond acting

  • [36:0143:27] Integration of Spirituality, Acting, and Business
Richard explains how his teaching evolved:
  • Acting was initially about overcoming personal fears and blocks
  • It became a metaphor for reclaiming shattered parts of the self and spiritual integration
  • He studied business (“street smart business school”) and realized business can be a heroic, creative process
  • He overcame guilt about money tied to spiritual beliefs and learned to merge art, business, and teaching
  • He emphasizes that everyone is in business, whether formally or informally, by creating value and taking responsibility for their lives
  • His work now spans business skills, life mastery, communication, and self-expression

Maui Neutral Zone family therapy session with smiling individuals in a cozy living room setting.Richard also mentions his current projects:

  • A new sci-fi series “Mellin” exploring archetypal stories and the human soul’s journey
  • Novels and other creative endeavors continuing the Battlestar Galactica legacy and exploring themes of evolution and spirituality

  • [43:2747:06] Teaching & Performance Style
Richard describes his one-man show featuring about 20 characters from around the world, combining humor and deep insights without preaching. He also teaches empowerment programs, including one aimed at women called “How to Remain a Dolphin While Swimming with Sharks”, addressing the challenges women face from childhood restrictions on expression.

  • [47:0649:38] Closing & Personal Reflections
The hosts share lighthearted moments about longevity secrets (breathing, flirting), Richard’s warmth, and the joy of hosting him in Maui. They emphasize his role as a modern-day magician of transformation and teaching. The video closes with more music and wishes of aloha.

Aloha welcome to another Mama presents I’m Jason you know me we have a great pleasure today to have Richard Hatch many of you know Richard Hatch from many things but the thing that I think was the most notable was your uh starring role in Battle Star Galactica with Lorne Greene and uh lots of other stars that we remember many moons ago Welcome

03:03
to our show thank you nice to be here yeah it’s uh Maui’s a second home to me I’ve been coming here for the past 30 years I took one trip to Wahu and uh when somebody invited me over to Maui I came over to Maui and that was it that’s it now I bypass to Wahoo go directly to Maui and I’m in heaven yeah see we do that we’re sort of like Monopoly we bypass and go directly um we’re very happy to have you here on Maui you’re here I guess um pretty regularly we’re hoping you have it regularly we just

03:34
last night were in at your I guess it was the performance closing dinner for your group uh acting from the heart right yeah we uh tell us about that well we I I’ve been coming to Maui for a long long time about 10 15 years ago I started doing some workshops and I teach uh communication unleashing your power and Creative Vision moving from Fear to self-mastery uh this one’s called acting for the heart which which is an acting class for everybody because it really allows everybody to tap in more

04:05
powerfully to their own authentic Center to being who they are as a human being and then learning how to communicate to express to create whatever it is that you do in life to do it from this more authentic more real place because that’s where you connect to something that brings you that great sense of value that great sense of accomplishment because you’re doing something that really is from your heart and I think too many people are doing things to pleas others to be somebody they’re not

04:32
and no matter how much money they make no matter how successful they are they still feel this empty hole in their heart and so acting from the heart really helps everybody from all walks of life no matter how old they are how young they are to really open up move through the fears inhibitions insecurities shyness and really learn how to let themselves out no matter where they are in front of a thousand people two people in front of a camera like this it doesn’t matter where you are you learn to be more comfortable

04:58
being yourself which is the key to to Great Joy great great happiness these guys out here know that that’s sort of our standard Amo we you know uh we are now doing TV here for a while and after a while we sort of have our own signature right now or in someone’s living room but we feel like you’re in a in a comfortable location rather than in the hot lights and you know things but um acting from the heart I think when uh people think of the word acting they think of something artificial but I think it to me acting

05:34
is everything we do cuz if the world is our stage right everything that we do that we are genuine and and uh come from a heart place you know well you know acting is true we had several people come yesterday thinking it was just going to be a you know acting class and I do teach you know acting classes I teach audition acting classes I direct many showcases for the industry I’m a director producer writer um I have several novels that are out now the next one is called Rebellion which is coming

06:04
out uh June 4th it’ll be at Borders in Barnes & Noble and it’s a uh it’s an extension of the Battlestar Galactica series that I start in with Lauren Green and it continues the epic journey of uh the 13th tribe and and uh the humans from that part of the universe who are searching for their their Roots their their their Homeland uh for new Homeland in this case and it picks up 20 years later with the original cast and a new generation born in space but the again the acting thing uh I went to my first

06:35
acting class and there was a sign out front that said no acting place and I thought that was quite a you know Paradox and when I walked into the class I realized that the class first and foremost was about getting real getting connected getting grounded getting centered in your own heart your own Spirit your own physical body being here um and then from that place learning how to make creative imaginable I mean using your imagination to make creative choices to create a hypothetical premise and then relating to it as if it was

07:08
real so in a sense you’re relating honestly to a premise to a concept of what is going on in this particular character’s life and then relating to it as as if it was real and finding a way to connect to that very powerfully so that you respond as if it was happening right now whatever it is that you happen to create whatever choice you make and that’s that was a very organic acting process but the wonderful part was people from all walks of life lawyers um doctors we had garbage men we had people

07:38
from every Walk of Life coming to the acting class because the process was a spiritual process because in a sense every character I explored every premise that I that I had to use my imagination to to fill and make real to myself helped me to step out of this what I call a limiting concept of who you think you are because we grow up you usually not getting the love and support we need so we in a sense start to pull in and become what we think is appropriate trying to fit in trying to get the love

08:09
we desperately need from others uh trying not to make too many waves and we end up limiting the scope of who we really are but acting forces you out of that little box you try all these different characters that help you to stretch out and what you discover is you discover all these little pieces and parts of yourself that you gave away and you begin to stretch out and every every time I do a character my own sense of identity expands and I have a much after playing all the parts I’ve played it’s

08:36
allowed me a greater freedom to be really who I am I mean I’ve really grown and evolved over the last 30 years I was terrified as a child I mean to get in front of a camera to to talk to anybody I couldn’t make eye contact with girls you know I was really really shy and so the the acting was a way of reconnecting to myself and get getting more comfortable connecting to the world so uh acting is for everybody and and no matter what you do or or don’t do an acting class can really serve you if

09:05
it’s a really really good teacher and that’s what I teach in my classes so it’s an acting class for everybody plus I do professional classes for professional actors as well but a lot of times the professional actors who come to class to be in the business end up being the doctors and lawyers and the doctors and lawyers who come to the class end up being the actors so who knows where it’s going to take you you know but it’s it’s a it’s a wonderful exciting fulfilling and enriching

09:28
experience for everyone here on Maui you know and in the things that you’re talking about if you were to go out through this camera and sit in the houses you would see we have a really very open maybe you’ve discovered that while you’re here very different kind of society here than on the mainland yes you do people hear a lot more outside the box and they really already have a uh a fair feeling for some of the things that you’re talking about they kind of live it to live here is out inside the box right you know it

10:01
isn’t outside the box well well it’s interesting I I mean everything you know I mean this place obviously is uh a lot of people who are stepping out of their life stepping out of being politically correct stepping out and finding an alternative to Alternative way of living uh many people move here to follow that some people are lost some people are exploring new avenues trying to find out where they should go next and I think one of the one of the things that that I also work on and I’m sure many teachers

10:30
do and we’re all having to balance this which is how to be in the world and how also to be connect and and live making a living we have to pay bills we need money we need to generate a certain level of Exchange in this world in order to to get through this world but at the same time finding uh a way to still stay connected to our heart to our integrity and to that creative flow that so many of us crave and miss when we get locked up in the context of a maybe a a Trad tradtion kind of living style so you

11:02
know I I work with people to help them find that balance how to tap into the creativity how to find whatever art that they have inside of them and that sometimes can be a business type thing creating a new business a new product a new service finding a way to take something you feel powerfully about in your heart in your soul and taking action on it to bring it into the world so that it’s physical so it’s tangible so that something that you can share and Exchange in the world which is what a

11:31
business a product or service should be something that you value something that uses your skills and talents and something that helps bring value into the world and then you create an exchange of value for Value which creates a monetary successful business for you and that kind of exchange is is really I think what most people are looking for we want to be doing something fulfilling and enriching that also allows us to earn the income that we need to do all the other things that we want to do to travel to pay our bills

11:59
whatever and uh but again that balances heart most people when they seem to move into the more creative more spiritual aspects of themselves they get disconnected from the business aspects of life and they struggle monetarily they can’t pay their bills they barely have enough they’re always worrying about money so I’ve worked on building workshops to help people find a way to balance that and also maybe to break out of limiting Concepts about money and what money is we look at money as energy

12:28
as energy in action and that it’s just a means of exchange and it reflects back to us where we’re holding on or withholding or where we have fear issues whether you have a lot of money or a little money it mirrors back to you your sense of value here right in your heart so the key is use it as a tool and then as you begin to bring your own sense of balance together you start to use money energy in a more balanced way your inflow what you sp what you receive and what you spend your outflow becomes

12:57
balanced you don’t move into what is NE negative financing where you’re spending more than you’re making and you’re slowly going into debt which is what our country our world is about our world is about and we have a little phone call do you want to we’re take a break okay we’re back um you know there’s lots of areas that we could talk about I’d like to find what’s your passion I mean right now you’re involved in new things and you’re working on U battl Star Galactica 20 years forward is

13:29
there any area that if I were to say you’ve got a big plate what are the things on the plate that most attractive to you everything that I do is really the same thing I the the expression self- ex expression creative expression um I love art I love music I love teaching I love lecturing I love doing anything that inspires people that impacts people in a positive way I get a great joy out of um the very thing that I teach others to tap into which is this great joy of bringing value into the world and then

14:03
exchanging value for Value when I when I tap into myself and I really connect to my own heart my soul my spirit when I learn how to love myself unconditionally to forgive myself unconditionally to really be present John Bradshaw talks about stepping out of a state of Abandonment which most of us are in on some relative level and stepping back into our own body our own heart and dealing with whatever traumas have made us separate from ourselves and try to be someone we’re not when we step back in

14:30
and reconnect we start to really build a real sense of value a real sense of self-worth from that sense of self worth it’s like money in the bank you have value because you’re valuing you you value your product your service what it is that you do what it is that you love you value the world more fully and you bring value into the world and when you bring value into the world it comes right back at you and you have this wonderful exchange of value for Value that’s the greatest joy in the world

14:58
being on a stage singing an incredible song and seeing tears in people’s eyes as they’re affected by the words and by the melody and by the Rhythm I mean that is the greatest joy in the world when somebody builds a a business that solves problems and really brings value and service into the world and it really comes from that place of service and not greed when it comes from that place not only do you make a nice income but you also have the joy of knowing that you are bringing value into the world and

15:28
you can see it and those customers that buy your product and service so often businesses get caught up in creating inferior products and then using billions of dollars to Market them and manipulate the audience or the the people out there in the marketplace to buy an inferior product for way too much and then it breaks down in five minutes doesn’t do what it says and people are angry they think of business as being Darth Vader the dark side of the force well over the past 10 15 years I’ve seen

15:55
so many artists and wonderful gifted talented people rape and pillaged by not really taking responsibility for what they have to offer in the world that business can be a very positive thing a very creative thing a very spiritual process and that Common Sense really is a win-win scenario that benefits everyone and when you really look at business I’ve discovered that when you really do business from that place from the heart it’s not something that you just do something for free no something

16:26
for free is really a sense of saying that there is I have no value for free means that you really don’t value your product your service or the customer people that get something for free very rarely value what you give them let’s just say someone does a wonderful thing for you yeah you know whether you go massage their shoulders which is also value returning or some energetic exchange or monetary exchange somebody who’s always receiving and never gives know feels a little guilty and a little

16:56
shamed they know they’re not returning and they they actually want to what about givers that don’t know how to receive many givers receive but you know the problems with givers givers that don’t know how to receive they’re giving from an empty cup because if they never receive they’re always empty and all the people that call themselves givers they come into my life saying let me help you let me work on you let me give this to you let me do this for you and you know what it always turns out to be

17:22
takers they come into my life and I feel drained come into my life and what was going to be given to me I end up giving to them because how can somebody give to you if they don’t receive anything if they don’t receive from their own heart their own Spirit if they don’t even love or value who they are if they don’t feel worthwhile or valuable and they’re not able to receive from nature receive from Life receive from their loved ones their family if they’re not able to allow

17:50
energy in then they’re coming from an empty cup so when they’re reaching out they’re not reaching out to give because they have nothing to give it’s all blocked in here so they’re really reaching out to receive the key is you want to build a balance between the ability to open up and receive which means you have to really deal with the heart where we hold a lot of trauma where many people are defensive and blocked and we have to learn how to release and process all that hurt and

18:17
Pain release all that stuff that creates depression in so many of our lives and then open that space to being vulnerable again but vulnerability is not weakness building vulnerability attached to the ability to take responsibility for who you are what you think what you feel what you know to be true and creating uh building the power to communicate it you build this sense of self-esteem that allows you to be vulnerable but powerful but strong with no need to leverage or put anybody down or usurp anybody when

18:50
you come from a place of real power what you want to do is create value you want to bring blessings into the world you want to bring wonderful things in the world and you’re coming from a full up that runs over you can’t help but want to give it and seeing what you do if you’ve ever had a plant or nourished something that grew the greatest joy is nourishing something feeding something and seeing it blossom into something wonderful I hear I think that’s the whole process of life here you’re

19:18
preaching to the choir that seems to be what happens with us you know we’re on we’re overflowing and what we we find is we really uh are able to bring gifts like yourself to the Maui Community people that come with so much passion of their ideas you know behind this camera and the people of Maui we have all kinds of people from all different walks of life and uh that’s our gift I love giving them the opportunity to meet people here that they wouldn’t otherwise get a chance to see right I hope that

19:50
you’ll be back to uh Maui and uh come join us again even before something that’s happening well I would I would you know for all of you out there if you get a chance uh go over to richardh hatch.com and check in because uh we’re doing lots of seminars and workshops all over the country um we’re also I have a production company and we’re developing series and movies and CD round games and we’re developing a new series right now called mellin and you can go over the Great War mellon.com it’ll link you over

20:52
world in the most powerful way possible and we have these boot camps we do three or four day Bo boot camps we do ropes courses we do lots of games and exercises to help people really clarify who they are what they really are good at what their heart really wants to do and then to lay out a course of how to really bring all of that value into the world in a real pragmatic downto Earth way so that you can be in the world but still connected to you know to Spirit to your heart to your soul not give that up

21:21
and pay the you know it’s almost like paying the uh the piper what is they sell your soul in order to to gain success you don’t have to do that you don’t have to lie and cheat to be successful you don’t have to manipulate you can be honest and actually have a incredible life business career relationship it’s possible and most people don’t think that you can really have it without somehow having to cheat or lie or manipulate you don’t have to do that I hear you know what I’d like to

21:49
do before you leave yeah I’d like to switch roles with our camera person CU I know that Ariel would love to come and share with you sure yeah come on in okay I’m going to do a switch step on in she’s going no no aloha we traded places Presto the magic of TV and welcome to Maui thank you do they do that the double kiss I’ll do it again you’re such a handsome guy I like to get kiss so so tell me Richard you know I I’m hearing a lot about what you teach other people right but what about you

22:30
you know where are you in your life and all of this and um how did you go from this acting Place into teaching you know what what got you to do that tell us a little bit more about let’s start with that one how did you that’s a good question yeah how did you go from the acting into the teaching and what made you propelled you into that I think I think there comes a moment I mean I think we’re all teachers whether we’re teaching those who are closest to us because we’re always

22:59
sharing what we’ve gone through right absolutely and so we’re all always turning around and doing that not not that everybody’s always open and accessible to receiving what we have to offer uh especially sometimes our children uh which is such a shame yeah I don’t understand you know you have all this life wisdom you’ve been through it you know you paid the price and the greatest joy a parent has is being able to share that that wisdom of what you’ve been through with your child and your

23:23
child will take it from anybody but you you know I think it’s their way of getting back at the parent on some level you know and and making them pay but nevertheless you know I think they also really just somehow can’t believe you have that wisdom right well that’s true until they get much older you know I’ve got three of them uh three children I mean right and um they don’t think we’re cool well you know finally my one has some kids now right so she’s understanding now he’s more he he’s more

23:53
appreciative now well my my own son I told him that a million times I said I can’t wait I just cannot wait until you have a son and you can have just a little smidgen of understanding of what I’ve been through you know because he’s he’s still has some resentment and you know I we all have different life paths and and mine was a non-traditional one even though I have fit into a traditional world uh quite well but have exhausted myself uh doing it but but nevertheless um I wasn’t married when I had my child

24:25
it was a like a first love when I was really really young and and yet you know um she kept the baby and I’m glad she did because uh he’s been a great blessing in my life and uh she raised him the first several years and then he went off to a private school I was doing uh Streets of San Francisco with Michael Douglas All My Children which I did for four years and so I was gone moving all over the place and you know I I felt this deep gnawing inside me to be a father and I felt guilty and ashamed

24:56
that I I mean I was paying and going to see them and doing all the those responsible things but I just felt like I was letting something Pass Me By so at 12 I took him out of a private school and brought him home to live with me and uh for the next eight years I it was the greatest joy in the world getting up at six just to take him up to the bus stop and most people think oh you got to get up at six you know because my lifestyle was very late and you know I would normally not get up until 10 or 11 but

25:23
you know it I felt like I’m being a father you know I’m getting to yeah you know but but it was a great joy I I loved going to the school the school events playing soccer with the teachers you know I love doing all that stuff so you know it was a it was a wonderful kind of opportunity for me in a sense to grow up because all my life I didn’t have a father as a young kid and whatever you don’t have you’re kind of searching for it in the world so I was always searching for somebody to Father

25:52
me to Mentor me and in a sense I was always operating from the position of the child interfacing in the world take care of me you know I’m you know I’m not capable of taking care of myself and it really took me many years to move from the child to beginning to become the adult taking responsibility for my life and realizing that I had the power to create things and make things happen and and be that person that I was always looking for previous right and so my son was the beginning of that moving into

26:21
the father becoming the father and really beginning to make that bridge that transition and then and then going into the teaching thing how happened A girlfriend of mine that i’ had been dating for 5 years said uh you know my friend works at UCLA where she was getting a degree and she said uh they have extension classes and they need someone to teach an acting class and I had been taking classes all my life I had gone through every form of therapy Galt riking trying to work through some deep traumas and life issues and climb

26:51
out of this little tight box I was stuck in as a child and and uh but I had reached a place in class where I was whispering in the back of the room always cuz I would always see things but I was afraid to get up to the front and acknowledge it and tell somebody give somebody some feedback so I’d whisper in there a little insight a little this or that and whenever I see people doing that in class now I always say you’re ready to teach you’re ready to move up here me to Vision you that way because

27:16
you’re yeah you’re so beautifully out there as you speak I mean being behind the camera and watching you speaking you’re so beautifully there so it’s like I have to really go back and go yes well I know that about me too right you know that part of me that’s very shy even though I’m still shy right I am too yeah and I’ve been in front of a camera since I was a kid right so I I totally can understand that but I don’t think a lot of the people out there can understand

27:43
that as well which is why I bring it up well bar a lot of times shy is even Barbara stron said this I mean she was terrified imagine having that voice that gift that Talent I’m being terrified of Performing but I I I have to tell you that every time I go on a stage or do something and I’m not a little terrified I never go beyond and feel that thrill of stepping out of the box I feel like I’m in a sense being redundant repeating myself I always know that if I haven’t challenged myself to do something I’ve

28:12
never done before or to take a larger risk you know I’m cheating on myself and I I teach this in my business classes and workshops that every time you go around the circle you’ve got to move further innovate grow try something new con constantly begin to bring in new Energy new information new Concepts and ideas because it brings people alive when they’re all of us sudden going into no man’s land and they have to really get creative and really solve problems and really wake up but if people are

28:42
doing the same same they go to sleep and every time they go around they’re getting redundant it get be life becomes boring the business becomes boring the product suffers the service suffers the business suffers and your life suffers oh I loved hearing you bring that up last night when you were talking talking about if you’re doing the same old same old right you know you’re not going anywhere and I was sitting there going well you know that that’s really a excellent point because so many of us

29:09
get caught in that trap you know even on a personal level as well as a business level yeah oh absolutely on a personal level on a business level on even a level with our children you know we we get caught in those boxes our tendency is to want to seek Comfort right and whatever we’ve done before we’re comfortable with and it really it really but the truth is now people are paying lots of money to find these exercises bungee jumping whatever it is to step out of the comfort zone and feel that thrill life becomes

29:41
thrilling when there’s some risk involved you know manageable risk it doesn’t have to be life defying risk but but manageable risk but the key is again every time I would do a workshop and seminar you know when I would create a little bigger space I would you know commit maybe a little bit more money and realize oh my God now I have to go out fill this space and and somehow meet the overhead that challenge would get my heartbeating and then I would end up doing things I never did before I would

30:05
have to reach out and extend myself in a way I’m usually not comfortable doing because I really had the intention whenever there’s a space the heart wants to fill it so I constantly would go out and meet more people I went to more events I went to events i’ never had gone to before I talked to people I’d never talked to before and I filled it and and then all of a sudden I have all these people in the room and I’ve never spoken or taught this many people I’ve never had an organized class which means

30:33
now I’ve actually taken the time to create something and the fear of oh my god I’ve really committed to something here and now what if it doesn’t work you know and and and boy I walked in there my heart was beating but it was the most incredible experience of my life teaching that first big seminar I did in a in a hotel and having really taken the the steps to create a workbook to create a program to lay it out I never did things in an organized way I always kind of showed up and did it kind of on the

31:02
spur of the moment because I never had to take responsibility for it yeah I know that one yeah you know it just happened you know and and therefore oh yeah but it’s another thing to actually commit to something and then really show up and embrace the entire experience and that means to embrace the the best and the worst that can happen it’s to face your deepest darkest fear and at the same time forgive yourself it’s okay and that’s that’s kind of what we were teaching also uh at the workshop last

31:30
night that’s great I I really enjoyed listening to that and you know I think a lot of people a lot of people only experience that risk or that feeling when they think they’re doing they’re not something they’re not supposed to I like doing things I’m not supposed to do but I know what you mean I understand I love being naughty don’t you oh I do it’s fun but but you’re right you’re right right you know but they’re they’re not able to transfer you know they’re not able to

32:02
it’s like they don’t find that feeling in things that they think they’re supposed to be doing it’s right it’s more with they’re having an affair for example you know and then they have that feeling of risk or the risk element involved don’t you think we’re locked up we have we have a lot of things that we think we should be doing and most of us we kind of pull ourselves into living life politically correct you know we we don’t want to violate anybody’s priorities or anybody’s you know world

32:31
and so we pull ourselves in and we become very homogenized you know and I and compromised by the way very and and I I really thank God for those people who who are outrageous because they do Shake our molecules and remind us you know that energy there’s no energy there’s no life there’s no passion when we’re all just locked in you know vacuum sealed into this little square tight box it’s not even fun no oh that’s when I come in oh fun lady we got it we got the fun one here I

33:11
feel like this is the barber string thing on satday Night Live you know butter butter no butter where’s the butter yeah cuz you you st Karen does anti naughty and she’s just lots of fun but talking about fun like butter yeah Richard in I took a workshop with Richard acting from the heart over the last weekend here and what was so incredible and that’s what I had to jump in I couldn’t resist here when you talked about outrageousness what I found the most amazing wasn’t just all of us um acting

33:47
when we did the the group orgasm if I may say that on television we all did the simulation from When Harry Met Sally and it was quite unbelievable to watch people who normally would be so shy and would never be able to do something like that I mean Richard just he busted every concept right at the beginning of the workshop by letting us move into the space of closing your eyes now and let’s all the Sally in that scene and it just brought all the masks down all the barriers down people just laughed they

34:23
got in touch with some part of themselves that was very deep also brought up some conflict too some people got very upset too as well good but what I really want to say was in the in the midst of all the fun and the wisdom and the knowledge what really was shining through was not all the years of your experience of what works in the world not only in the acting world but what works in life it was really a life course yeah that’s was the most important thing it was a life course but what I personally want to

34:54
share was what each and every person got in that room and I know that you do this automatically was the love and the acceptance that they felt from you each and every person had a sense that wherever they were at was okay and that you would support them to get to what other level there was nobody was ever made wrong nobody was ever put down and I watched you you know being The Observer that I am I’m a participant Observer I’ll jump in and I’ll be outrageous but I also always notice everything that’s going going on around

35:28
me I have a real Eagle Eye for things I was watching everybody and I was watching you and seeing how easy you made it for people who were terrified to be out there I mean I don’t have a problem with it you don’t arel doesn’t have a problem with that you don’t have a problem with that but there are most people 99.9% of people would rather die than do that and to see them in your Loving Hands just tickle them enough open their hearts enough and let them be there and I was also amazed at your

36:01
patience unbelievable patience to let it all just unfold very naturally very organically but then just give the kick in the Consciousness when it was necessary right and that’s where the Mastery comes in you know I think one of the hardest things uh to do and I’m sure you you know teaching is that you have to C have a certain level of structure to a class but you cannot predict what’s going to happen within the course of a class and it’s like you know you can allow so much time for this and so much

36:35
time for that but things happen things come up that actually start a flow in a whole other direction or a group energy or something comes up an issue like the sexual issue I mean when we did the Harry Mally you know I to tell you the truth I wasn’t even thinking how that might impact people on a very deep level where they it might bring up abuse issues you know you know and and it did it brought up a lot of abuse issues and and you know that’s I wasn’t even thinking because so often in in class

37:05
acting class we we use that exercise just to become more uninhibited more free and allowing yourself to really experience something that many of us are shy about or feel uncomfortable expressing to strangers and yet an actress of course or an actor has to do that on camera in front of the world so but you know actors constantly work through those things in class but I I I did forget for a moment how something like that can per touch people on a profound level but it brought up core issues I mean I really it really

37:39
became quite clear that that in life what are the biggest issues sexuality sex Sexual Energy you know some people Embrace fully I was always had a lot of guilt around sex until I was almost 50 years old and my mother had a lot of guilt around sex I couldn’t enjoy sex without feeling guilty did do matter how when or why um and you can be abused in many many different ways Beyond just physically abused absolutely you know and I wasn’t aware of all the abuse issues that I had you know but again sex

38:11
money business the idea of business people get all upset thinking of business when they have to apply what they do and bring it into a business context so again you know all those things bring up issues that you know move the the class in different directions in areas that sometimes one class has more of a problem with this area some classes have more of a problem with that area and also there’s a lot of teachers a lot of empowered individuals in a workshop like this in Maui and sometimes it’s letting go and not trying

38:43
to control everything and really like you say just letting the flow go where it wants to go and yet at the same time keeping a a gentle rain on it because it can go way off the deep end if you let it so it’s it’s a tendency it it’s really that balance and I’ve had to learn it the hard way and and Maui always brings those lessons home to me the strongest if I try to control in any way shape or form I get into deep trouble Mama Maui is one of the greatest teachers on the planet you know I really

39:14
wanted to know from you how did you get from teaching acting to teaching um what you’re teaching now or do a lot of your focus on to me it’s apparent that you’re focusing on uh spirituality uh underneath of the coming from the heart and and opening the heart and acting when you say acting from the heart I think a lot of people took this Workshop thinking it was an acting Workshop right and sometimes it turns into an acting workship sometimes it doesn’t yeah so how did how did you get

39:49
from the you said your girlfriend brought you into teach acting good for her thank you very much um and then how did you change that well well I started the acting thing and like so often you know everything that you teach is what you learn and uh for me I had to struggle with expressing myself communicating overcoming my inhibitions and fears so I took classes and workshops on that and then I began to teach that process of what I was going through and having to overcome and how I found a way to get up in front of people

40:22
and communicate and use fear you know as a friend and make it an ally and work for me so it wasn’t book learning it was actual experience and I found that the acting class which to me was a spiritual process anyway it was one of learning how to embrace all those bits and pieces that somehow got shattered as a child on some emotional spiritual physical mental emotional level God knows when but I shattered into a million pieces in a sense it was like reclaiming all those parts of my being that got lost and

40:52
acting was a metaphor for that so that spiritual process began to stretch out from the ACT in into communication self-expression and then I went to a street smart business school which somebody brought me to and I brought came up against all my fears of business money management prioritizing things i’ had never really thought about because I always thought business was antithetical to Art and you know and I was a rebel so I really rebell against that but then I realized that business was a heroic

41:22
courageous process of people taking an idea a concept and then mold buing it and shaping it and managing resources bringing people together to create something and I thought my God how I’ve been sitting in Judgment of these people and and and then money I had to go through and I had made millions of dollars and I I got rid of it as quickly as possible because I always felt how can I be I was really into St Francis of aissy at that time it seemed Brothers son sister Moon I thought how can I be

41:49
spiritual and have all this money and and so you know I felt horrible and then I went to seek a lot of help which I paid a lot of money for and and paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to seek help to you know work through my my guilt and shame and then uh again it led me step by step into actually going into business bringing my art together with the business and learning how to be an artist a teacher um a poet Warrior and at the same time a businessman and I thought you know in truth we’re all in

42:22
business and until we take that responsibility we’re always in a sense at the mercy of others we’re always waiting for others to create something to invite us to we’re always waiting for somebody else to invite you to the party and I thought you know that’s when we really truly have given our power away is that we don’t think we have the power to create the party oursel to create the event to put something together and that’s what I started teaching I I started moving into you know teaching

42:49
business skills uh life Mastery skills communication skills self- expression skills but all of it was what my journey was about so again I don’t just teach I have a production company I do business I write novels I write from various Publications um I’m creating new technologies I’m really into physics right now I I really physics is a spiritual process mathematics is a spiritual process all of it has to do with life who are we where have we come from how do we evolve what is this physical body how does it operate I mean

43:27
I’m all of that is coming into my work and I’m using it in this new series that I’m putting together uh which is a new Sci-Fi series called mellin which uh is a very archetypal story structure a great epic journey of the human soul searching for answers to the unknown and I think that that that sounds really exting all all you know battar Galactica was spiritual it dealt with the 13th tribe it dealt with uh you know evolution of of the human species where we come from where are we going and a

43:56
deeper understanding understanding of of who we are and and the fact that life may be out there in the universe and you know from all the research I’ve done uh it would be impossible for life to only be on one little speck in in this vast universe that we are part of and so God has many mansions and uh we uh we we need to uh to buy a ticket so we can go visit all of them I’m ready say hello when do when do we [Applause] leave here we go we [Music] well I’m going to have to take a class

44:31
with you and you come back because I still haven’t got that business part down yet myself well I’m gonna also take this lovely lady’s class uh come back in here for a second that was that was the International Film Festival oh they wanted to come and say hi to Richard oh really but they had to well they have to go they had to go one went the other two are coming back oh okay um yeah you’re you’re you do a a speaking class well I do several things um I have I have an array of about 20 characters from all

45:01
over the planet all little children boys girls old men old women who have many different accents of ways of looking at life and basically my one woman show that I’m putting together right now is a humorous yet deep journey through all the various faces that God wears on the planet so I like to I like to teach without preaching I like to make people think deeply while they’re laughing that’s and she’s really good at it I like to do that and I have I have taught at the college here and I have gone to

45:35
the mainland to various conferences where I do several programs that have an entertainment factor to them but they’re mostly about teaching I do a course called how to remain a dolphin while swimming with the sharks empowerment skills for women why only for women um this particular program was geared for women because women have a harder time with that than men from the time we’re we’re little we’re always told be a good little girl be quiet sit in the corner just look pretty don’t don’t make a fuss

46:07
of things don’t create too much energy around yourself or attention where whereas boys are taught more to you know get out there and show yourself and you know make it happen be a man yeah girls you know they always say you know um children are seen not heard but usually they’re implying that towards girls good little girls are seen but not heard well I think that’s changing a lot though slowly you know from from where certainly from where I was you know I I know for me years ago when I was in high

46:38
school it was like when I did the tests you know that say what you’re supposed to do and right it came up oh she’s supposed to be a doctor well of course they looked at me and they said well girls are nurses right you know and thank god well that is changing and people like you are giving people the tools to work with in that direction thank you k I think what we have to do is another day we’re going to have to show you Auntie naughty and um a few of these wonderful characters that Karen that

47:06
