Introduction and Context of the Chemo Cafe
This installment marks the fourth episode of the “Chemo Cafe,” a series that offers a lighthearted, humorous, yet educational and informational glimpse into the life of a cancer patient. The host shares a candid reflection on the surreal experience of living with cancer, expressing a mix of disbelief and gradual acclimatization to this new reality. The tone is set as both personal and relatable, aiming to bring viewers into the emotional and physical journey of coping with cancer.

  • [00:25Introduction of Guest and Relationship
Joining the host is Dr. Gary Schubach, a longtime friend and collaborator spanning 25 years. His presence adds a comforting and knowledgeable dynamic to the conversation. Gary has long wished to be a guest host on the Chemo Cafe, and his participation underscores the deep personal and professional support network that the host relies on during this challenging time.

  • Sheer Relaxation at Maui Neutral Zone in Hawaii, a serene environment for visitors.

    [01:08Current Emotional and Physical State
Gary candidly shares his recent emotional experience, describing the past few days as challenging, marked by feelings of isolation and being “down in the dumps.” Despite the presence of friends and support, he acknowledges an internal cloud of uncertainty and stress. He highlights the paradoxical nature of having time to “relax” but feeling mentally burdened by conflicting medical information and the pressures of navigating treatment options.

  • [02:25Therapeutic Treatments and Physical Care
The conversation shifts to physical well-being, focusing on the healing treatments at the Temple of Peace, which have provided a noticeable emotional and physical lift. The host mentions receiving structured, nurturing bodywork from a massage therapist, emphasizing the importance of holistic care. They also discuss the use of the Biomat and infrared sauna therapies, which aim to create hyperthermia—raising the body’s core temperature to make the environment less hospitable to cancer cells. This approach is integrated into the chemotherapy regimen, offering hope that complementary therapies can enhance treatment efficacy.

  • [03:42Diet and Nutrition
The host describes maintaining an alkaline diet primarily based on vegetables, vegetable juices, soups, nuts, seeds (especially sprouts), and some raw foods and fish. Occasional indulgences, like a turkey sandwich on a croissant, are noted as rare but acceptable treats, reflecting a balanced approach to dietary discipline and personal comfort. This diet is intended to support overall health and complement medical treatment.

  • [04:31Upcoming Medical and Research Activities
Looking ahead, next week is significant due to a scheduled telephone interview with Dr. Moss, a research physician specializing in cancer therapies across conventional and alternative medicine. Dr. Moss has compiled extensive research, including a 400-page report tailored for different cancer types, which the host and their team are reviewing. Additionally, a follow-up appointment with the oncologist on Maui is planned to finalize and adjust treatment strategies. These activities highlight an active, informed, and multifaceted approach to managing the illness.

  • [06:14Message to the Audience
The host openly admits to not feeling very humorous or organized this week and expresses gratitude for the ongoing support from viewers. There is a heartfelt acknowledgment of the emotional impact of viewer engagement, encouraging continued communication through writing and emails. This segment underscores the therapeutic value of community and shared experience in the cancer journey.

  • [06:44Gary’s Role and Perspective
Gary elaborates on his role in filtering and synthesizing the vast amount of medical information to help the host make well-informed decisions. He stresses the importance of preparing meaningful questions for upcoming medical consultations, recognizing that patients often struggle with knowing what to ask. He shares his own emotional fluctuations between hope and doubt upon encountering promising information and setbacks, highlighting the complexity and stress of the cancer experience. Gary emphasizes the necessity of critical thinking and the value of having a dedicated support team to navigate this landscape.

  • Older man and woman talking in a cozy, tropical-themed home setting in Maui.

    [09:13Optimism and Immune System Focus
Gary expresses optimism about therapies that stimulate the natural immune system, suggesting that the immune response is pivotal in ultimately defeating cancer. He notes the mystery surrounding why the immune system sometimes fails to reject cancer cells and admits that understanding this better would be invaluable. Despite uncertainties, Gary praises the host’s current health and radiance, reinforcing a positive outlook.

  • [10:12Guided Writing and Inner Work
The host shares a piece of guided writing from a supporter named LW, offering a meditative and spiritual reflection. The writing encourages embracing inner peace, confronting and releasing fear, and illuminating the “interior darkness” as part of the healing process. It advocates transparency in documenting the cancer journey, suggesting that sharing this intimate process can inspire and assist others. The text emphasizes free will, divine guidance, and the importance of following one’s inner truth. This segment reveals the significant emotional and spiritual dimensions of healing beyond physical treatments.

  • [14:56Reflection on the Inner Journey
The host reflects on the sobering reality that healing is not just about positive visualization but involves deep introspection and confronting subconscious feelings. The recent hospitalization of the host’s mother adds to the emotional complexity, highlighting the intertwining of personal and family challenges during illness. The host also shares a personal update about an ex-husband’s impending remarriage, noting feelings of acceptance and healing.

  • [16:38Gratitude and Support System
Gary and the host express gratitude for the supportive community surrounding them, emphasizing the blessing of having caring individuals and a nurturing environment. There is a hopeful anticipation for the next episode, which will follow two crucial meetings with medical professionals. The importance of community engagement through blogging and messaging is reiterated, inviting viewers to actively participate in offering love and support.

  • [17:25Closing and Future Plans
The episode closes with plans to introduce a guest comic to bring humor into future discussions, aiming to lighten the mood with “chemo jokes.” The sign-off is warm and uplifting, reinforcing a sense of connection and shared journey from Maui, offering aloha and encouragement to the audience.

Summary Overview:

Older man and woman relaxing at home in Maui, Hawaii, capturing the peaceful island lifestyle.

This is installment number four of the chemo cafe. A lighthearted and humorous, educational, informational look at my life as a freaking cancer patient. And I still can’t believe it. And I’m kind of getting used to it and kind of not. It’s very, very surreal.

00:25

With me, I’ve got the esteemed and most adored Dr. Gary Schubach, a very dear friend of mine and 25-year associate and teaching partner.

00:39

Just lifelong, lifelong friend. Always wanted to be a guest host. So I’m fulfilling a dream here at the Chemo Cafe today. And now here’s Gary. So I was just looking at the tape from last week’s Chemo Cafe and was kind of wondering how this week has been for you.

01:08

oh god it’s a very good question it’s very open-minded and it’s been a bit of everything i just don’t even know how to answer that right now the last three days have been hard um it’s been more of a sense of being inward and a bit isolating myself and um

01:31

Probably I would say a bit down in the dumps. Even though I do have friends and people around to support me, it’s still, you know, in some ways I feel like I’ve got a cloud over me. Just, I’m in it. And I go from really being hopeful about all of the different remedies and cures and medical breakthroughs that are going on, and then I get in the middle of it and

02:01

It’s just new information comes in counteracting other information and it’s very crazy making and very stressful. And so even though now I’m not working and I have all this time to so-called relax, it’s really not all that relaxing all the time because I have a lot of things I’m confronting. So you’ve spent most of the days this week like last week going to Temple of Peace?

02:25

Yes, I did. I went almost every day for the healing treatments at Temple of Peace, and those I do feel quite well physically and emotionally when I get out of them. It’s very, very good. I’ve been having some great body work with Nirja Heather Parsons. She gives an amazing, amazing, nurturing, but very structurally complete massage. It’s wonderful. All kinds of good stuff.

02:52

You were talking before about the Biomat and the infrared sauna. Yes. Did you want to talk about that a little bit? You stopped the Biomat, I guess, temporarily. Yeah, I stopped the Biomat. We had to return it, so I’m getting another loaner or in the process of seeing whether my insurance will cover it.

1. Elderly man and woman having a conversation at Maui Neutral Zone wellness center.

03:12

this hyperthermia is what they’re calling it which is the heating of the core temperature of the body which is said to create an inhospitable environment for cancer to live and so as well as before the chemotherapy treatments during it it’s especially supposed to be good so that’s very exciting to be doing something that is helping my chemotherapy

03:42

I’m curious what your diet has been like. Oh, gosh. It’s pretty much an alkaline type diet. So it’s vegetables and vegetables and the juice of vegetables. I’m also having, you know, a lot of different soups and nuts and seeds, mostly sprouts.

04:11

and raw things, and a bit of fish, and some mama’s homemade chicken soup here and there. That’s good stuff. Yeah, yeah, that’s good. Though I did want a turkey sandwich on a croissant, and I splurged on that, but it’s the first time in two months, so it’s okay.

04:31

So, what kinds of things are coming up for you now? What do you see the next week being like? Next week is a big week because we have an on-telephone interview with Dr. Moss, who’s a research physician who’s dedicated his life to

05:01

finding out across the board from the conventional medical to the complementary alternative medicine therapies, everything about cancer, all the different kinds of cancers, and what the best known strategies are. And he goes through all of them. So for each kind of cancer, there’s a 400-page printout. So we ordered it.

05:25

or in the process of reading it myself and Gary and a few others in my research team. And we have an in-person interview with him on Thursday. So that’s one thing that’s going for this week. Friday we have a next appointment with the oncologist here on Maui. So we’ll kind of put our strategies together, figure out what the best thing is for me to do finally, and then move forward with it.

05:56

Is there anything you’d like to say to people out there watching, the vast audience watching the Chemo Cafe? Well, you know, it’s supposed to be a humorous look at this, but I haven’t felt that humorous yet, so I’ll come up with something as I can.

06:14

You know, I am not feeling that together and organized this week, so I haven’t done a lot of prep work in terms of, you know, what I want to say. So I just appreciate you following this along, and I love you all, and, you know, to those near and far, you know, my heart is with you, too, and I feel your love, and it makes a big difference for me. So keep writing, keep emailing. It’s all good.

06:44

Gary, I thought maybe you might want to say a few things about your involvement, what you’ve been doing lately on my behalf, and what you’ve been learning that’s helpful or things surprising to you. Right.

06:59

I think our intention, those of us who are going over all this material, is to make sure that you have the best information possible and that you have a decision-making process that you feel good about. As you mentioned, people are very well-meaning and they all want you to be healthy and to thrive.

07:24

And so they get involved in their particular thing that they believe in. So we’ve been filtering through that information and trying to distill it down so that you get the essence of it and the things that look like they might be promising and that we, most important, develop a good set of questions both for Drs. Moss and for

07:53

the oncologist the next day that the right questions are asked. Because often people just don’t know what questions to ask. So that’s basically what we’ve been involved with. I’ve been having the same feelings that you’ve had. I see things that are promising or, you know, I talked with, for the first time I’ve had contact with some survivors who are reasonably healthy.

08:21

Relaxed couple enjoying discussion at Maui Neutral Zone home, tropical decor, indoor comfort, peaceful vibe.

So it gets promising and then you read something else. So it’s like that and I’m trying to remember my training and to question everything in the appropriate way and make sure that you get good information.

08:43

So I want to encourage everyone who’s out there who cares. We really appreciate your feedback, and I think you can understand, as Adriana has talked about here and in the earlier ones, that it can be very stressful when you’re in this situation. Just the pressure of all the people coming at you meaning very well. So I encourage everyone to make sure that they have somebody to say that they say it, and there’s a group of us who are hearing it first.

09:13

And I will make sure that anything that’s worthy gets to your attention. Yeah, good. Is there anything that’s particularly worthy that you’re optimistic about outside of the chemotherapy choice that is on the table, obviously? I like the things you’re doing, and I like things that stimulate your natural immune system, because ultimately that’s going to be the question.

09:43

In the long run, these things attack all of us all the time, and for some reasons we don’t know. Our immune system either accepts or rejects them. We don’t know if we knew about them. It would be worth a fortune if we knew, but we don’t know about those things. But it’s good seeing you healthy and radiant, and you look good, and I want to promote that. Thank you, Gary. Thank you.

10:12

So, not sure if there’s another question on the horizon or not before we end for today. I did have another one of my guided writings come through. I thought that would be nice to read. So, I’m going to do a quick up and down here. This is LW. Yeah, LW came over to visit. Knows where the action is.

10:42

Isn’t that nice? He’s been trying to break into films for years. This way is the camera. This way, this way. There you go. You know, I think I know that all of us that are caring about Adriana’s health, sometimes being a patient, we’re all inquisitive of what’s happening. So I’m glad we’re doing this kind of weekly dialogue

11:09

take the burden off of Adriana having to repeat things, both the good and the bad. It can really be much, so this is a good thing. She’s coming back with her special writing. Here she comes now. Okay. All right. Thanks, everybody. So I’ll just go for it. This came in on the 17th. Love you, LW.

11:38

Adriana, let us guide you into that place that is peaceful and clear. As you open to that place, the state of meditation can commence. Taking your breaths deep into that place of peace within you, you find yourself the deeper you breathe, the deeper you go. We are here to remind you

12:06

that dark isn’t scary, that there is only God, and that peace is our constant true state. That way, as you contact and acknowledge deep feelings, they are all held in the space of love and thus can release the fear hold on previously unexamined feelings. This is the time

12:35

for you to take the submarine deep inside and down under. For part of your healing lies in bringing the illuminating light inside your interior darkness. As you do this, you continue to understand levels of this work that you will be able to help people with more as time goes on. Begin your list of healing modalities you are using for your web page as

13:05

People are wanting to know and your record keeping is part of the beauty of your personal research. Also, posting our words to you will give people an eye and a heart, an eye and heart opening journey into your inner process and thus their own. Do not hesitate with this and that the words have already been written and the wisdom clear.

13:31

so may as well be transparent with this intimate part of your process. There is not much that we can tell you directly about your right path, yet we will say that the information is being sent to you on the wings of the angels, some your close friends, to point the way to go. As has already been stated, your free will and the process of choosing

14:00

is both divine law and your own evolutionary process. While we can’t give any secrets away, you will live and thrive to cut to the chase. How is your path? Be brave and follow your own inner truth impeccably. This is the dance of your life and your most important work so far.

14:27

You’re documenting your journey is characteristically you and a demonstration of wanting to truly serve and using yourself as primary example of the teachings. Keep an idea sheet around. That way, when you collect material naturally through the week, it builds confidence with the preparation. Keep up the great work, dear one. The fight is not yet over, but the biggest battle has already been won.

14:56

And there we have it for today. Live. Isn’t that nice? Live from the chemo lab. Live from the chemo cafe. Yeah, this was good, wasn’t it? Yeah. It gives a hopeful message, you know. It makes me feel good hearing it. And yet it really points to a lot of inner work to be done. It’s not all light and fluffy or, you know, floating in the clouds and visualizing. It’s getting down to it and really seeing what’s in my deep subconscious and what are my feelings and

15:25

Where are they coming from and releasing them out? You know, my mom wound up in the hospital this week. That’s another thing that happened. Yeah, right when I’m going through all this, she’s having some real balance problems and some physical problems that got her, you know, to the hospital. And now she’s in the rehab hospital. And it’s just a lot of things, other things going on, too.

15:50

explore the feelings I found out my ex-husband looks like he’s getting married soon so that was just another little thing you know that I just happened to pop in like yesterday just over the internet just innocently surfing Facebook you know and find this out but you know it’s all good I feel more healed up from it than ever and I wish him well I wish her well too

16:15

My mind and ego has come up with some very clever statements I would like to tell her, but I want to keep my mouth shut. Especially when you have thousands of people here. Oh, but then the sweetness would be… No, I know you wish him blessings, for sure. I do. I wish everybody blessings. And he, you. We all wish you blessings.

16:38

Thank you. The voice from behind the camera here. The voice from behind the camera. Well, I do feel very blessed. I feel very lucky going through what I’m going through to have these great people around in this wonderful environment and a lot of support. We look forward to next week’s show. I know that next week will be significant because you’ll have had two very important meetings. And we hope to be able to…

17:07

Be there and be supportive. We as a group of thousands, I hope all of you that are listening are going to be writing in and making the blog active with all your love for Adriana. That’s what I’d like to see. How about you, Gary? You think that’s a good thought?

17:25

Right. And next week, I think I’d like to maybe have a guest comic. A guest comic. Let’s see what we can do on that. Some really good chemo jokes. Okay. That sounds good. Okay, everybody. Life from Maui. Aloha. Aloha.
