Key Insights
- [03:08] Global Connectivity for Youth Empowerment: The Kidcast for Peace event exemplifies how emerging internet technologies of the late 1990s were harnessed to connect children worldwide, giving them a voice and a platform to collaborate on global issues like peace and environmental stewardship. This early use of video conferencing and multimedia presaged today’s digital classrooms and online communities, emphasizing inclusivity and cross-cultural dialogue.
- [05:16] Creativity Cafe as an Educational Innovation: By establishing a space where art and technology converge, Creativity Cafe reimagines education beyond traditional classrooms, focusing on experiential learning and storytelling through digital media. This approach anticipates modern STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) education, highlighting the importance of integrating creative arts with technical skills to prepare students for future challenges.
- [11:00] Democratization of Music Creation through Technology: The digital music software demonstration shows that with the right tools, musical composition is accessible to anyone regardless of formal training. This lowers barriers to artistic expression, encouraging creativity based on intuition and passion. It also hints at the increasing role of computers in creative arts, foreshadowing digital audio workstations and home studios now common in music production.
- [15:06] Interactive Engagement Enhances Learning and Connection: The live video interaction with children globally, exchanging peace signs and messages, demonstrates how technology can foster empathy and shared purpose. It transforms passive consumption of media into active participation, strengthening community bonds and allowing children to see themselves as part of a global movement for peace.
- [22:00] Cultural Identity and Environmental Awareness through Art: Children’s artwork, rich with Hawaiian language and natural motifs like turtles, butterflies, and plants, underscores the importance of grounding global conversations in local culture and environment. This blending of cultural heritage with universal themes of peace and sustainability educates youth about their roots while connecting them to broader planetary concerns.
- [36:28] Preserving and Celebrating Indigenous Traditions Amid Technological Advances: The natural Hawaiian musical instruments segment highlights the value of maintaining cultural traditions alongside embracing new technology. This dual focus ensures that progress does not come at the cost of cultural loss, but rather that heritage and innovation coexist, enriching the educational experience and fostering respect for indigenous knowledge.
- [48:06] Vision for a Future Driven by Youth, Technology, and Positive Storytelling: The event’s conclusion emphasizes the rapid technological evolution enabling widespread global communication and creativity. By encouraging children to become content creators and publishers, it envisions a future where youth shape narratives and solutions for a healthier, peaceful world. The focus on sharing “good news” counters typical media negativity, promoting optimism and empowerment.
Extended Analysis
This video is a compelling snapshot of a pioneering multimedia event in the late 1990s that anticipated many contemporary themes in education, technology, and community-building. The organizers leverage the nascent internet and multimedia tools not just as gimmicks but as foundational elements to democratize creativity and foster global citizenship among children. The use of video conferencing to connect disparate groups of kids around a shared mission for peace and environmental responsibility is a remarkable early example of virtual collaboration. It demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to education—beyond rote learning—to include emotional intelligence, cultural exchange, and technological fluency.
The Creativity Cafe concept is particularly innovative, offering a physical and virtual space where kids can experiment with digital and traditional media, learn new technologies, and engage in storytelling. This interdisciplinary model addresses multiple learning styles and promotes inclusivity for both tech-savvy youth and those less familiar with computers.
The musical demonstration provides insight into how technology can simplify complex artistic tasks, making music composition accessible to novices. This empowerment through technology democratizes art and encourages creative confidence. Coupled with the cultural celebration of Hawaiian instruments and hula, the event balances cutting-edge tech with deep respect for tradition, serving as a model for culturally responsive education.
The children’s artwork and their explanations reveal a profound awareness of environmental issues and a heartfelt desire for peace, illustrating how creative expression can be a powerful tool for emotional and social development. The integration of Hawaiian language and symbols within their work also reinforces identity and pride, critical components for resilience and self-confidence.
Finally, the closing reflections highlight the transformative potential of global connectivity and youth engagement. By providing children with the tools and platforms to tell their own stories and propose solutions, initiatives like Kidcast for Peace and Creativity Cafe nurture the next generation of leaders who are both technologically literate and socially conscious. This event not only celebrates Earth Day but also embodies its spirit by fostering a global community dedicated to healing the planet through creativity, collaboration, and shared humanity.
In essence, the video captures a hopeful vision: a world where technology amplifies the voices of children, cultural heritage informs innovation, and creativity becomes a universal language for peace and sustainability. It is a testament to the power of community-driven efforts to reshape education and global interaction for a better future.

lot here that’s going to happen after the event that I’m sure you’re going to want to know about so we think it’s so simple takes a lot of work it’s a lot of work a lot of preparation people are configuring machines or gathering uh all of the elements for successful kidcast of which there are many and in fact this year um even the elements are expanding as we push the envelope of what is possible given today’s technology well we want to thank Cyber City Maui for hosting this
location for you absolutely Cyber City Maui has been wonderful with this wonderful venue right here in the center of uh uh kahalui and we hope to uh have an ongoing relationship with them right up until we open the doors of creativity Cafe m well I look forward to uh seeing all the things that happened today thanks Jason I’ve got to get back and let you see going to let you go last minute preparations place is looking good thank you Sean we appreciate you guys there we go that looks great break away and I don’t have a car
Venture oh you got the money okay so I’m writing him a message now saying go to the creativity Cafe website look for our hot links and there you will find a link that will lead you to the free software for this video conference so great that’s what’s happening hey here come our kids yay hello H what your hi thanks for joining us we’re here at the demonstration of the creativity Cafe this was in October of 1994 at the mon convention CER during the multimedia Expo there we were given
600 ft of Booth space to prove in reality our concept of creating a new school for the next millennium a school where art and technology is used for the betterment of humanity and to create a venue for the storytellers of the future we have 20 people that came together 6 weeks before the show who brought in their resources with some support from manufacturers so that we can provide this demonstration for the attendees of the conference we had everything from video portraiture to a See You See Me
video conference on the internet to interactive cdrom demonstrations and interactive theater featuring The Cyber beat brothers who would ask volunteers from the audience to come up and participate in their art form in this case what they do is they have devised a system of body sensors that trigger synthesizers so that when the body moves the music plays and here we have one of the volunteers on the left playing a little riff and the Cyber beat brother on the right is kind of waiting her out and then he raises his hand to uh just
let her take the lead and then he puts his hand down now she’s taking the lead now he’s joining her uh by their both body movements they’re jamming together here he’s laying out again and just letting her take the lead we feature a lot of a interaction in our events we’ve been producing events since 1980 she obviously enjoyed her experience up there as most people do at the creativity Cafe it’s a fun environment for getting work done or for having fun here we’re showing people how to make
their own CD ROMs and demonstrating the Visionary Stampede interactive educational entertainment project from one of the schools in the San Francisco area here their kids were and demonstrating the project to the public our video cast to the submarine was very very successful on the internet low bandwidth but highly amusing for people our digital painting is always wonderful people love to have their photograph taken and put on the big screen and then we manipulate it for their enjoyment our guest registry is a way for them to tell
us their needs their wants their hopes and desires and we put them together with other people who might share their Vision or be able to help manifest what it is they’re looking to accomplish in their lives there’s a lot of con ctions that go into making this kind of Enterprise successful we’d like to have a permanent facility here in San Francisco we hope that you can move us closer to that goal and once we get a pilot project uh running here successfully we’ll duplicate it all over
the world we’re bringing resources to the community at large for those who have computer experience and for those technophobic people that don’t what we’re trying to do here is to create a vehicle for transformation I’m showing off uh software here interacting with people on the stage and I think uh this is the best implementation of the creativity Cafe I think we’re going to do a lot of really cool things for [Music] the so it gives you a sample of what the environment we’re looking to create is
all about it’s an ongoing place where you can come and play where you can dance where you can create your stories either with traditional Media or by making videos and then connect with other kids up all around the world who are doing similar things so we’re very lucky to be here at Cyber City Maui to help us demonstrate what we’d like to do in the future here on Maui to have a place where we can all gather and where the community can take advantage of all of these great computer resources that are
so expensive that most people can’t hope to afford to acquire them but we hope to give them access so that they could use them at little or no cost with government and other kinds of subsidy so you can come in after school and tell your stories and connect with other kids and bu build virtual reality places and explore other parts of the world and and just connect like the adults are connecting so that’s what we’re doing here for you guys and that’s why you’re here today because we’re going to set up
so you can see other kids around the world who want to share what they think we should do to make this a happier healthier and safer planet and that’s the purpose of today’s Earth Day uh multimedia cybercast on the Internet is to give you the opportunity to share your visions of a better world and to tell us how you think the adults uh can make this a better happier healthier and safer more peaceful Planet so we hope that you enjoy the show or have enjoyed the show and will tune in again with us
as we continue building on the success of kidcast for peace solutions for a better world and join us in creating a world that works for everyone thanks for coming around [Music] That’s all folks so everything’s automated these days now the computer caught all of those notes and if I hit any wrong ones I can go back in here and I can look at the music in many different ways I can look at the music let’s just pick one track here let’s pick um what I was doing with uh uh I don’t know let’s
let’s pick uh this track right there see if there’s anything on it so I’ll go like this and it brings up a window and if we scroll backwards you see these bars you see the bars so these these represent the notes and if I have this turned on when I click on a note you hear it and these are the notes I can make them longer or shorter by click them and stretching them so if I were to play This Bar of music just that much sound like this but here this this program will actually write out the notes that you’ve
played on staff music so that you can give it to a musician and they can play it so you can compose on the keyboard if you only can play by ear if you can only play by ear you can compose on on the keyboard and then you can record it on the computer the notes that you played and then you can print out the sheet music and give it to an orchestra and they can play your Symphony and you don’t have to know a thing about music all you have to know is you like what you hear wow that’s nice it’s very very exciting so when you
marry that this is the musical side of things when you marry that to the visual 3D kinds of software then you become like a Steven Spielberg anybody know who that is yes has anybody seen Jaws or Jurassic Park or any of that well we’re going to have the software that’s going to enable you to make movies like that in a little computer just like this sitting on your desktop that exists now this technology you see right here is capable of doing that and you’ll all have access to that here on Maui if
we’re successful in getting on the air in time to impress all of corporate America waiting and wondering where the you know what we are well we’re the kids here and on Maui we represent the future or you guys do actually get fre oh yeah well let’s see if we can get a hold of tune in you guys can talk to him where do I type just type in right there hi cre creativity Cafe are you still there can you hear us this is creativity Cafe there’s some students maybe coming in later do you know what means could somebody
get over here and get on camera anybody doesn’t matter hi this is uh Peter at creativity Cafe Maui thanks for the peace sign we see you say what now where both um Jesse we need frame grabs on this too remember okay here let somebody get in here and give Peter a little little shoulder rub mellow him out a little bit give him a little bunny ears yeah peace symbols give me peace symbols over my ears hey guys you represent now you the whole world [Laughter] on that machine at your on okay flip it
sideways not point it on Forest head a little sharp fing way so that his looks the best in that little screen that’s right here’s the little screen and if you have to stop for minute just to get it to be cool see if you move it too fast it can’t catch up to the what you’re doing should grow him so we can save fossil fuels and um save trees people should love each other people need to allow love to happen and allow more human contact to happen and people need to educate themselves
okay you mean internationally don’t you yes International the global Nation the one nation the one heart global reach local touch that’s it so Gabe how do you feel uh having internet access has it made a difference in your life yeah how I have no life now your life is all about sitting in front of a computer no no do you make time to go out and do things yeah you w’t do uhhuh and do you have special times that you work on the net or is it kind of whenever you feel like it at night or whenever I feel like it usually
at night because that’s a good time what do you do on the internet what do you use it for email and talking to people do you have a website yeah I have two websites do they have titles well no I mean yes one of them is called pictures of me and it’s just for my friends to see what to see um pictures of me I see and then another one is called programs for Windows 95 and it’s a page of links to these cool programs ones that I found very useful freear school programs to learn things from Mostly freear no it’s not
school programs it’s oh cool programs cool programs ah I see it was it was more just for fun just to share your friends yeah and it sounds it seems like a good way to to publish something that normally I wouldn’t be able to publish you know oh well there we go so you’re really publishing things when you put them on the Internet oh yeah that kind of makes you like a newspaper or a radio station and Link it’ll link youever it gets to a link return it’ll follow the link go all the way down you
see all our solar power that’s right fun happy Earth [Music] [Applause] [Applause] here I a a a a [Music] [Applause] thank you for coming Peter [Music] [Music] okay we are going to have now the children of Maui singing a special peace song as they make their entrance we’ll show you now outside as the kids are coming in no we won’t show you outside [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] High [Music] that was wonderful thank you so much everybody a round of applause we here at creativity Cafe Maui
and as you know this is Earth Day and we’re here to give the children The Leaders of Tomorrow an opportunity to help shape the world that we’re building for them and that they will build too and that’s why we’ve invited them here today to the creativity Cafe see you see me kidcast for peace networking event which asks children all around the world to share their artwork and what their suggestions might be to help this be a happier healthier and safer Planet so we’re going to ask the kids they call

Amsterdam this year uh because of my kid cast for Peace website and the creativity Cafe website and when I was in Europe I saw a woman who did a natural musical instrument jam with kids and the way they did it was that she had all of the kids played their instruments while she wriggled her fingers and when she made fists all of the kids would stop playing and then she wriggled her fingers again and the kids were able to make all of the noise with their instruments such as sticks batted together and Stones hit together and a
stick on a on a serrated snail shell or a scalp snail shell so right now I’m going to show you I’m going to show you the natural instrument that I brought back from Amsterdam here it is this is a pair well maybe it’s really not a natural instrument but it sounds like this it’s made of plastic and it looks like a peir so it’s not really natural but the ancient Hawaiians they used to make natural instruments and the natural instruments were made from gourds and seeds and feathers and we’re going to
see some of them right now okay kids what have you got [Music] there okay so here are the kids all gathered here in our studio maybe we could open this blind and get some more light I’ll do that and uh oh we made our photographer B come back thank you very much for sharing your pictures with me I really appreciated it oh hear that there’s somebody in cyberspace who loves us C okay so uh we’re now about to demonstrate the natural instruments from Hawaii and the children um have them could we hold them up above your hands
straighten it out okay so here we are we have all the kids and uh let’s hear what the instruments sound like play them all together okay now I’m going to wle my fingers when I wle my fingers you play and when I make a fist you stop okay here we go st stop oops okay here we go pay attention I’m wiggling my fingers and the kids are their instruments and I make a fist and they stop who wants to lead the band okay you’re first everybody’s gonna get a chance so you can leave your instruments there and
come up here and face your friends and wriggle your fingers to make them make sound both hands both hands both hands both hands and now make a f okay and make him go again okay stop them okay now you decide when to make them go and you decide when to stop them go ahead that’s great okay who do we have somebody else leave them in a song oh like to leave them in a song okay’s let’s have this girl right here okay come on up and be in front you can leave your instrument there and uh Le the band
okay okay you get to face your friends okay now listen she’s the conductor go ahead okay so what’s happening now is she’s leading the orchestra of the kids in this room now I don’t know if there anybody else insidey the space who has the natural instruments does anybody else have natural instruments out there can you jam with us anybody in cyberspace well we don’t hear anybody so what we’re going to do is we’re going to have the kids sing a song and their teacher uh canel is going to lead the
song so canel would you like to do that y okay let’s see if we can get a picture of them [Music] [Music] oh [Music] he [Music] well done oh oh well done oh that was terrific that was great so I know it might be asking too much but do you know any hola can anybody share some hola okay we have a special treat yeah we’re going to get to see some original Hawaiian hoola this is how the Hawaiians Unite with nature and feel peace for their Earth and peace for their planet is they they speak their
