Summary & Transcript Below…

00:30

1. People enjoying live music session on Maui, Hawaii, in a cozy studio setting.

Aloha and good evening. It’s February 27th. I’m here with Steven Craig. Hello. He’ll be playing this weekend at the Mulligans. But before we get to that point, we have Luis on keyboard. We’ll be talking to him later and listen to their great, great music. But first, we’re going to go straight into the news with Jack Gist. And then we have a couple of events to cover, some sads. But then we’re going to get to happy. So stay tuned. Here’s Jack Gist.

01:02
Aloha, I’m Jack Gist with your Island News headlines. Three people were killed in a plane crash about a mile southwest of Lanai Airport last night. The deceased were identified as a pilot of the plane and two Department of Planning employees. Two other Planning employees were in critical condition and a deputy attorney for Corporation Council was in serious condition. All three survivors were airlifted to the Queens Medical Center after the crash. The group had been on Lanai earlier that evening to staff a Planning Commission meeting. The crash occurred around 9.20.

01:30
The Hawaii Police Department is looking for a man wanted for questioning in the robbery of the Bank of Hawaii branch located in the Kihei Safeway store on Sunday afternoon. Police say they are looking for Christopher Michael Sherritt, who’s 40, for questioning in the case. Anyone with information is asked to please call the police at 244-6400. With your Iowa News headlines, I’m Jack Kessler. Very somber news coming out of Lend-I last night. Very sad we lost…

01:59
two three very important members of our community planners that do the community planning there on lanai for a just a lanai update meeting nothing special and the planes didn’t quite make it so hearts brought to the families who who lost their loved ones hearts are on the floor for the families who are still waiting for the recovery it’s tough man it’s really really tough

02:22
All right, so we’re going to go straight into a press conference. Chivo was live this morning from the county building, from the press conference. Not a lot to be said, but here’s what we got.
02:35
There’s a police procedure that is in place for identifying victims that we’re trying to respect here. Also, please refrain from asking how the plane went down, if we knew there were any mechanical problems about the plane, if there was bad weather. We don’t know the circumstances of the crash. We’re leaving that up to federal investigators. And now Mayor Akawa will say a few words.

03:03
Loa, and thank you for joining us today. At around 9 last night, four members of our planning department and one of our corporation council attorney got on a charter flight at Lanai Airport to return to Maui. Their plane ended up crashing about a mile southeast of the airport. Emergency dispatchers were called at 9.23 p.m. by one of the passengers of the plane who described the crash site and where they were in relation to the airport.

03:32
Fire personnel arrived at the scene about 12 minutes later where they found three injured male survivors, two deceased females and one deceased male, the pilot. Two of the survivors were in critical condition while the one who made the phone call was listed in serious condition. All three were airlifted to the Queens Medical Center where they are still undergoing treatment.

03:57
We do not know why the plane crashed or the circumstances surrounding the crash. These questions are best left to the FAA and NTSB investigators. What I can say is this. We lost two of our own last night. One of them. One of them was a longtime employee who worked for us for decades.
04:28
The other was a bright young planner who was dedicated to her job in serving the public. The entire county mourns for their losses, but the pilot who also died in the crash, our hearts go out to his family as well. We would also like to wish these three people, or our three people that are being treated at the Queens Medical Center, a speedy recovery. We have sent the managing director Keith Regan and a team from the county to Oahu this morning to meet with the survivors to see how they are doing.

04:57
and to try and provide anything we can do that might help them get through the healing process. For the rest of our county family, especially our planning department and corporation council, we’ll be making grief counselors available for anyone who needs them, either here, Maui, or in Lanai. From what we understand, our people at Queens are being treated for second and third degree burns on their face and hands. The severity of those burns vary among the three survivors.

05:26
We also understand that we may have had more casualties had one of the survivors not been able to move the other two away from the flames. He was also the one who called 911 as soon as he was able, which enabled the emergency crews to attend to the injured quickly. I would also like to thank our fire and police responders who were at the scene. They got the flames out, tended to the victims, and got them to the ambulance as fast as they could so they could receive emergency care.

05:56
Also, many thanks to the AMR Air and Hawaii Life Flight for providing aircraft that transport people to Oahu. This is a tragedy that has stunned our community, but we’re also thankful for those whose lives are spared.
06:15
As mayor, I’d like to thank the media and the public and ask you to please be respectful to allow the families to grieve, our wounded to heal, and our investigators to do their job. What did fire crews see? Okay, fire crews arrived and they encountered three surviving victims. They came across the aircraft. The aircraft was fully involved by the time they got there. So upon extinguishing the aircraft,

06:45
At the same time, MPD officers were attending to the victims. They extinguished the aircraft and they discovered two victims within. The meeting was a meeting with the Maui Planning Commission with the Lanai Community Plan update team. The Lanai Community Plan is being updated.
07:08
with a group of planners and GIS staff and support secretaries. This is the fourth or fifth meeting that they’ve had with the Lanai Planning Commission. They had more than a dozen meetings at the end of last year with the Lanai Community Plan Advisory Committee that was a citizens group.
07:32
So this team has been traveling to Lanai on a regular basis for many months, sometimes by ferry, sometimes by charter. And the meeting last night was just one in a series of going through the community plan update process with the planning commission. Very somber, sad news. Look to your local broadcast station on Oahu for…

08:00
More extensive interviews, I believe, and more info tonight is just developing. I know the survivors are at Queens Medical Hospital on Oahu, and the one that I know of is in surgery. So prayers and aloha to all the families. Very, very sad, very, very traumatic. Very close community, and these aren’t lawyers. These aren’t politicians. These are people who work for the Planning Commission, too.

08:29
improve our communities. They weren’t. You know, they weren’t bureaucrats. They weren’t mainland people. We don’t know. So very sad, very brokenhearted this evening. I believe in getting the best of it all the way first, so I’ll appeal from here now. Shout out to one of our extended OHANA members, Todd Norman. He was named Logistic Officer of the Year for the Marine Corps. He was honored this evening in Washington, D.C.,

08:57
His family is very close, is a family of one of our employees here. Congratulations, Todd. Thank you for your service. And we’re going to go into the Entertainment Report because I have entertainers with me, and I want to see them play, so I’m going to rush along. All right, Tom Blackburn, Entertainment Report. Let’s see what he has to say. Aloha. I’m Tom Blackburn Rodriguez, and welcome to the Akaku Weekly Entertainment Report.

09:21
A little later in the report, we’ll tell you how you can get a free short stack of buttermilk pancakes at IHOP. But first… Friday, it will be hard to decide where to spend your entertainment dollars. In Kihei, it’s a family-friendly fourth Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Izeka Shopping Center, Malka.
09:40
This month’s theme is celebrating the month of love, and all the entertainment is free. Kathy Titta Collins is the emcee, and you should never miss a chance to see this talented and versatile woman perform. Friday is opening night at the historic Eyal Theater in Wailuku for La Cajafo. Opening night is a fundraiser for the theater and includes what is being called special activities and prizes. Maui On Stage promises a gala event.

10:09
The performance is at 7.30 and the show continues until March 16th. Student Theatre takes on Broadway and Shakespeare with two productions opening on Friday. Baldwin High School Performing Arts Learning Center and the Baldwin Theatre Guild presents High School Musical at the Baldwin High School Auditorium. Performances begin Friday at 7 p.m. and continue at 7 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.

10:37
King Kekaliki High presents Shakespeare’s The Tempest at 7 p.m. Friday in the school cafetorium. The show continues at 8 p.m. on Saturday, and the last show is at 3 p.m. Sunday. The Tempest may have been the last play that Shakespeare wrote alone, and it’s considered by many to be his greatest work.

10:59
Continuing this week is Fiddler on the Roof at the Stepping Stone Playhouse in Queen Kahama’s Shopping Center. Presented by the Maui Academy of Performing Arts, the musical starts at 7.30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and on 2 p.m. at Sunday. The run continues until March 16th.
11:17
Back to Kihei, maybe it’s Fourth Friday dinner and a theater night. The play is The Thing continues at the Pro Arts Playhouse with performances at 7.30 on Friday and Saturday and the final performance at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Moving to Saturday, the singing duo Mamo performs at 7.30 p.m. at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center’s Yoko Uchi Pavilion.

11:42
Also on Saturday, the Lahaina Town Action Committee holds the Lahaina Whale and Ocean Arts Festival from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Banyan Tree Park. It’s a free festival of marine-themed art and music and hula entertainment.
11:58
Saturday is also a great time to take a drive on a, dare I say it, long and winding road to Mulligan’s Irish Pub in Waialea at the Waialea Blue Golf Course. At 7 p.m., it’s a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Beatles coming to America, featuring Louise Lambert. There will be prizes for the best Beatles and 60s costumes. And as we promised at the top of this report, here’s how to get free pancakes on Tuesday.

12:28
It turns out that Tuesday is National Pancake Day, and diners at IHOP can have a free short stack of IHOP buttermilk pancakes. A portion of the proceeds will benefit children’s hospitals. And finally, on a sad note, we want to send our prayers and thoughts to the survivors and the victims of a recent airplane crash on the 9E.

12:53
These folks were not government officials or bureaucrats. They were our neighbors and friends. Maui remains a community of small towns. And when something happens to one of us, it happens to all of us. And it did last night. I’m Tom Blackburn-Rodriguez. Thanks for watching the Akaku Entertainment Report. We’ll see you right here next week on Akaku Channel 55.

13:22
Well, I apologize for the technical difficulty with that sink, but I’ll replace it later. I am sitting here with Steven Craig. Hello, Dana. You play guitar? Yes. Do you sing? Yes, I do. Do you play anything else? I play drums and some bass, a little piano, and some harmonica.
13:40

Relaxed man recording in podcast studio, Maui Neutral Zone, Hawaii.

And you just decided, you know, I’m going to play the Beatles this weekend. Yeah, well, I have a history of playing the Beatles. I played in the Fab Four in Las Vegas for almost 10 years. So at Planet Hollywood. So I’ve done over 3,000 shows in costume as John Lennon. So your closet must be pretty fun. I have quite a little wardrobe, wigs, and Sgt. Pepper suits. You probably have a nicer one than mine. Oh, I don’t know about that.

14:04

Older woman speaking into a microphone at Maui Neutral Zone event, advocating for peace and community.

But you get all dressed up, and you… Yeah, I did for a long time. I still tour once in a while. I go off the mainland, and I’ll be with different Beatle tribute groups, Beatlemania Now. She Loves You, various acts that do the Beatles. But I love Maui. Any big names we would know? No. In the Beatle world, in the fake Beatle world, yeah, there are some pretty great, talented people there, actually. But yeah, it’s kind of a small little niche of people. It’s a niche. Yeah. Mm-hmm.

14:31
Awesome. And Mulligan, you just decided, you know, let’s throw an anniversary party and just play music. Well, I was fortunate enough to be invited by Miss Louise Lambert. If you camera seven or whatever it is, there she is. There’s Louise over there. We’ll be hearing from her, right? Yes. We got to preview her music earlier this week. We kind of ran out of time, which is why we brought you guys back for more. Okay. But she was just fabulous. I was so bummed we ran out of time. There she is. There she is. She’s on the TV. You’re on TV. I was so bummed we ran out of time last time they were here, but I’m glad both of you came. Thank you.

15:00
So tell me a little bit about the show. Is it going to be all night? Is it going to be short? I’ll hand that to Louise. Go ahead, Louise. Well, we’re starting at 7, and people should get there early if they want a good seat and make reservations. I went to the Dead Zeppelin September. Oh, you went to September. Yeah, my daughter, America, was singing in that one, and she’s going to be singing with us, too, on Saturday for the Beatles. Oh, so you’re not just in the family. Oh, I have nine brothers and sisters and two daughters.

15:28
The jeans I never had. You can have some of mine. Geez, my jeans never included music because, Lord, I can’t carry a tune in a bucket. Oh, my goodness, no. So who put this together? Pardon? Who put this event together? I did. It was my idea. And Steve Craig was recommended by Tom Conway. And Steve just arrived here a month or so ago. So we’re so happy to have him on board with us.

15:53
You just flew in from where? From Las Vegas. Flew in from Vegas to play Beatles on Maui. Life’s tough. Let me bring out my tiniest violin. I can hear it now. Mozart, please. Mozart, play Beatles, please. So how many people are performing?
16:12
Well, gosh, I haven’t counted. There’s Merica and Jamie Gallo and Steve, of course, Eric Dotterer from the Institute of Hawaiian Music that I do the Hawaiian music with. Awesome. Dan Solberg and the House Shakers, Kenny Geyser on guitar and Lenny Castellanos and Paul Marchetti.
16:32
So quite a big lineup of people. Different people will take different leads. In fact, Jason Schwartz, who you see on this show many times, hopefully we’ll see him a little later with us and he’ll sing with us. He’ll get out there. He jumped right out there the other day. He’s doing a few songs with us as well.
16:47
So what are your favorite Beatles songs, I have to ask? Oh, me? Yes. I’d say it’s a hard question, but A Day in the Life is one of them from Sgt. Pepper. I Will from Paul. Oh, I love that one. I know. You do a lovely version, by the way. You have a Sgt. Pepper jacket. Yes, I do. I have the whole suit. Double-lined bridal satin. Thank you very much. Maybe I shouldn’t be bragging about that. Just play I’m an artist. It comes in handy.

17:12
It’s the card everyone here on Maui plays. I’m an artist. Yeah, I got the boots and everything. But I like the wardrobe here. Shorts and t-shirts. So people are encouraged to dress 60s, right? I guess that would be appropriate. Yeah, there’s going to be prizes for the best 60s costume. I picked up some prizes. And Mulligan’s also donated dinner for two gift certificates. Oh, I might have to whip out my boots. That’ll be great. Yeah, whip out your 60s gear. I’m going to go as Twiggy for the first thing. Are you Twiggy? I love Twiggy. So what’s considered a 60s dress?

17:42
Well, you can go early 60s with mini dresses and bobbed hair. Or you could go later 60s with the Janis Joplin kind of look. Or you could go mid-60s with the glitter tops and the mini skirts. Oh, whoa. That could be a fun evening. You answered that very well, Louise. I’m like, don’t look at me. Bell-bottoms? I don’t know. That’s 70s, I think. Bell-bottoms in my closet. Yeah.

18:05

Bright entertainers performing soulful live music at Maui Neutral Zone.

Well, that sounds like a fun evening. How many people are you guys expecting to show up? Well, the main room is pretty well sold out. So if you want to make sure you get a good seat, you have to get it soon. I would take a terrible seat, actually, for this event. Even the terrible seats will be good. Even the terrible seats will still be bad. Good. But we’re encouraging people to reserve for dinner so they can get a good table in the room with the band. And then you’ll feel like you’re in the band.

18:28
Because we did September, Ogaku did it. So we were working the event, so it was like my cheat way into watching it. But it was fun. It was a blast. There were something like 1,800 people there. It was packed. You couldn’t even move. I mean, even trying to work the event, I couldn’t even move. Trying to run a wire, it was just amazing. It’s better to be on stage at those moments, for sure. It is. And I know our programmer, he was one of the performers at September. Oh, great. Yeah, Sean Michael.

18:55
John Michael, oh yes, of course, John, John Michael. He’s our programmer, yeah. He’s our programmer when he’s not on stage rocking out, so. Yeah, he’s great. So we were working it, but he was like, I don’t want to work it, and I’m like, you’re going to be on stage. Yeah, cool. Right? So you flew in for this event.

19:09
Well, actually, I got a one-way ticket, so I’m staying for a while. Ah, one-way tickets. That’s the best thing. One-way tickets. One-way tickets to paradise? Yeah, pretty much, and that’s how I feel about it. I’ve been visiting for a long time, and I’ve been planning on being here for quite a long time. There are plenty of rock stars and celebrities who…

19:27

Concert discussion at Maui Neutral Zone about environmental conservation in Maui, Hawaii.

Basically did the whole visiting thing. Well, George Harrison was here for a while. How long? McFleetwood now lives here. Kris Kristofferson. Kris Kristofferson now lives here. Pat Benatar had a place here. Steven Tyler I hear has a studio now. Oprah.

19:42
And, of course, the late, great George Harrison. He was here for many, many years, I believe. So, see, you’re just joining the ranks. Yeah, you know, absolutely. Good company. Very good company, yes. Everyone’s been really nice, by the way. I would like to absolutely say it’s just been a very welcoming experience. Musicians and people and bar owners and restaurant people and all that. It’s just been great. We do love our music here. I think part of why people here love music so much is we don’t get the big bands.

20:09
So when we do have the chance to see even a cover band and really have fun, we go all out. People here, they love it. Yeah, that’s great. Well, Steve and I are playing at 3’s this Friday with Eric. So have a little trio tomorrow night at 3’s. Well, then good thing you’re on the show tonight to get some weekends.

20:27

Maui community television studio featuring two hosts with Maui Native Zone banner in background.

Yes. A lot of people come out and dance. I do swing and East and West Coast swing. So anything from Old Motown and swing to Beatles tomorrow. And I also, I kind of promised to plug Rita’s too. I’m playing Rita’s every Wednesday. Is that okay? Is it too late? I just do that. Rita’s Steak and Fish House. So if you don’t make it, so if you get the crappy seats on Saturday. No, no, no. I’m just saying, you know, they’ve been very nice at Rita’s. It’s a cool place. It’s great. No, it is a cool place. I love the patio. I play up there. Right next door to Three’s. Yep, right there. They took over the whole.

20:55
Lulu’s. We used to play there. We went there for New Year’s Eve because it was nice and hot. Yeah, that’s a neat place. It’s been good. So are there any different instruments or is it all basic? Oh, do you mean playing at Rita’s? I just play guitar. Solo, acoustic, a little harmonica, but just acoustic guitar and voice. They went on Saturday to different, because I know September had a lot of different instruments. People kind of brought in their own stuff and

21:18
Well, we have ukulele, three guitars, bass drums, and keyboards. We’ve got all kinds of… We have a bagpiper at the last one. Oh, cool. No bagpipes that I know of, but lots of singers like you and hundreds of other people singing along. And the whole audience. Yeah.
21:37
Yeah, exactly. The entire audience in the parking lot. Well, it is called the Beatles sing-along. It is the Beatles sing-along. Yes. Let’s see if we have a PSA break real fast so we can get set up for them to play some of their stuff. All right. Do you have a break? All right. Akaku is your community resource. Offering advanced training in digital technology.

22:07
You’ll find online video and information at your fingertips. Developing new and innovative programming.
22:34
Bringing you live events as they happen throughout Maui County. Akaku, serving you for over 20 years. All right.
22:59
And we’re back. Before we go live to the music, we do have a Napili report. Sasha is in there. Can I see him? What is he doing out there? Can I see him? Well, look at the view, guys. It’s very beautiful. All right, hello, everybody. All right, I’m Sasha here, and I just saw Louise Lambert on Akaku. Hey, Louise, if you can hear me, aloha.

23:25
It’s been a while, I haven’t seen you or America, and I miss your music, I miss listening to you. Anyways, again, aloha everyone, I’m Sasha Obama from the west side, Maui. As you can see, it’s a beautiful day. However, it looks like there’s fog on the other side of the island, so for you guys on the south side, I feel a little bit bad for you, but I’m feeling it too. Remember the good old days of playing music?

23:51
Well, it’s a beautiful tune on my way. Kickin’ the west side. Beautiful sunset right behind me. Lookin’ outside, I’m on my way. Tryin’ to play guitar while I’m singin’ here on TV. Anyways, I just wanted to give you guys a report. I can’t hear anyone out there, so basically it’s just me on camera with my iPhone going live.

24:18
Again, like I said, it’s a beautiful day. And heart goes out to Stephen Holt in the hospital. Double pneumonia. We love you, Stephen, if you’re listening. Also, my heart goes out for the people and the families that died in the Molokai. I’m sorry, Lanai plane crash. I know that’s a tragic incident for us people in Maui because of extended families. Anyhow, check out the sunset behind me. And aloha, signing off.

24:47
Thank you, Sasha, for that report from Napili. It looks beautiful out there. I don’t know why I’m in a studio. But we have music to get to. Yes. Woo-hoo! All right, Sasha. I’m just going to give you the floor. You got it? Okay. Some more Beatles stuff. One of my babies. One, two, three, four, five. Close your eyes and I’ll kiss you. Tomorrow I’ll miss you. Remember I’ll always be true.

25:17
And then while I’m away, I’ll run home every day, and I’ll send all my loving to you. I’ll pretend that I’m kissing, and if I’m missing, and hope that my dreams will come true. And then while I’m away, I’ll run home every
25:46
And I’ll send all my lovin’ to you All my lovin’ I’ll send to you This is where you put in the ooh parts All my lovin’ Darling, I’ll send to you Woo-hoo!
26:16
Close your eyes and I’ll kiss you Tonight I’ll kiss you Remember I’ll always be true And then while I’m away I’ll ride home every day And I’ll send all my lovin’ to you All my lovin’ I will send to you
26:46
All my loving, darling, I’ll be true. All my loving, ooh, all my loving, ooh, all my loving, I will send to you. Yes. All right. Oh, look at that.
27:09

Live music performance at Maui Neutral Zone with acoustic guitar and keyboard.

We’re still going, yeah? All right. So now we’re going to do one more song. We’re running low on time. And here’s another one. Thank you for letting me join you guys. All right. If you can make it out Saturday, you’re going to have a lot of fun because Louise Lambert and Stephen Craig are terrific, and they’re going to be joined by all kinds of people. And if you like singing, get your voice ready because you’re going to be singing all night. Ooh, ooh, ooh.

27:38
What would you think if I sang out of tune? Would you stand up and walk out on me?
28:02
Lend me your ears and I’ll sing you a song. I will try not to sing out of key. I get by with a little help from my friends. I get by with a little help from my friends. I’m gonna try.
28:29
A little help from my friends What do I do When my love is away Well does it worry you To be all alone And how do I feel By the end of the day Are you sad that you’re out
28:56
I get by with a little help from my friends I get high with a little help from my friends I’m gonna try with a little help from my friends Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
29:27
I need someone to love. Yeah. If you need anybody, all I need is someone. Oh, oh, oh. Oh, oh, oh. Oh.
29:50
I get high with a little help from my friends. I get high with a little help from my friends.
