Jason Schwartz with Three Singing Eagles, AKA “The Listener” on Maui, Hawaii in the mid ’00s… Three Singing Eagles came back from a US mainland cross-country tour where she spoke with people and got their feelings and opinions as she went. Clearly, it’s not scientific results, but hearing varied opinions is worthwhile

Journey and Insights of Three Singing Eagles on Homelessness and Social Issues
[00:29 → 07:01] Introduction and Background of the Journey
Three Singing Eagles, a member of the Mama Maui Arts and Music Association, recounts her journey to the mainland United States while pregnant. The purpose of her trip was to listen to and document the stories of people who felt forgotten by society—those slipping through the cracks despite the rhetoric of peace and prosperity. She aimed to bring these voices to the attention of the then-new president, emphasizing the theoretical role of the president as the “parent” of the nation and the forgotten people as the “children” needing care and acknowledgment. The journey began in San Francisco, where she was immediately approached by many individuals eager to share their stories of neglect, hardship, and invisibility.
[07:01 → 12:13] Encounter in San Francisco and Website Information
Upon arrival in San Francisco, a man with silver curly hair approached her, initiating a deep and meaningful conversation about the conditions of the country, comparing them to experiences in Germany and Russia. This interaction set the tone for the many personal stories she would collect. Three Singing Eagles kept a detailed journal, which she promised to make available online. The website, accessible via “angelfire.com” under the search term “FACES OF THE MOON,” hosts her journal entries, the International Declaration of Human Rights, patients’ Bill of Rights, and other relevant human rights treaties. She also provided a PO Box for those without internet access to request information, highlighting that only 1% of the global population has computer access.
[12:13 → 19:17] The Forgotten and Homeless: Stories and Social Observations
Three Singing Eagles shared poignant accounts from her journey, such as a park worker in Monterey, California, who nearly lost his job for giving $10 to a homeless man. She revealed that many churches advised their members not to give directly to homeless individuals, insisting that charity should only be given through official channels—an approach she found perplexing and contrary to many religious teachings promoting private acts of kindness. She described the homeless population as a diverse group, including educated individuals and those with significant potential. She emphasized that homelessness is a systemic issue caused by lack of sharing and empathy, not moral failure.
[19:17 → 24:11] Comparison of Support Systems: Mainland vs. Hawaii
She noted that Hawaii, particularly Maui, has comparatively better-funded and more compassionate social programs than many mainland areas. Examples include shelters and numerous 12-step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA). Despite these resources, people still fall through the cracks, and homelessness is a pressing issue everywhere. She stressed the importance of recognizing addiction as a disease, not a character defect, and called for professional involvement in creating awareness and support through media and public education.
[24:11 → 29:25] Needs and Misconceptions About Homeless People
Homeless individuals often possess skills, education, and insight, contradicting stereotypes that they are lazy or unable to contribute. Many are working or attending school but cannot find affordable housing. The discussion touched on the inadequacies and bureaucratic hurdles within welfare and housing systems, including application fees, discriminatory practices against families with children or pets, and the overall scarcity of affordable rentals. The societal tendency to isolate and stigmatize the homeless exacerbates these issues.
[29:25 → 38:44] Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Housing Crisis
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) guarantees an adequate standard of living, including food, clothing, housing, and medical care. However, legal rights do not guarantee access, as many barriers persist, such as welfare reform that limits support duration and invasive privacy violations during applications. Three Singing Eagles recounted her personal experience of becoming homeless despite being a full-time student with children, a housing subsidy, and good academic standing. A sudden cancellation of her
housing agreement due to the landlord’s refusal to make HUD-required repairs left her and her children without a home days before moving in. She highlighted the ridiculousness of multiple application fees charged by rental agencies and the lack of affordable housing inventory.
[38:44 → 46:40] Rental Market Realities and Societal Reflections
The rental market is extremely competitive, with dozens of applicants vying for a single unit and paying fees that are rarely refunded if not selected. This system exploits vulnerable people seeking shelter. The scarcity of rentals forces difficult choices, such as abandoning pets, which are vital for mental health, especially for shut-ins and the elderly. There is a cultural disconnect between the values of sharing, community, and compassion and the current economic and social structures that perpetuate homelessness and isolation.
[46:40 → 52:38] Mental Health, Addiction, and Media Influence
Depression among homeless individuals is often a natural response to loss and trauma, yet treatment mandates psychiatric evaluations and medication, which can have lifelong consequences. The media often glamorizes or normalizes alcohol and drug use, inadvertently encouraging substance abuse as a coping mechanism. Three Singing Eagles advocates for emotional authenticity—allowing oneself to feel and express pain, such as crying, as a healing process. She contrasts the visible substance abuse among homeless populations with the often-hidden addiction problems in private homes, arguing that substance abuse is more pervasive in stable housing.
[52:38 → 58:55] Blessings, Community, and Cultural Practices in Hawaii
Despite hardships, Three Singing Eagles reminds viewers of their blessings relative to global poverty and suffering. She calls for a collective shift towards greater generosity and community support, challenging the cultural tendency toward individualism. She describes camping systems in Kauai that manage homelessness with designated free or low-cost camping areas and regular park maintenance, fostering a sense of “ohana” (family) among displaced people. She emphasizes the importance of mutual support and acknowledges that many homeless individuals are employed or actively seeking stability.
[58:55 → 01:07:41] Encouragement for Action and Personal Empowerment
Three Singing Eagles encourages viewers to overcome fear and societal barriers to help others, even when official institutions discourage direct aid. She stresses the importance of personal involvement in social change and awareness-raising. She and host Jason invite community members to participate in public access television, submit footage, or share opinions to amplify voices often unheard. They promote collaboration with local media outlets such as Akaku to broaden coverage of social issues.
[01:07:41 → 01:09:19] Closing Philosophical Reflections and Quotes
The video concludes with reflections on societal walls built from fear and mistrust, quoting Leo Balia on the need to tear down barriers and embrace trust and connection. Emotional vulnerability, such as crying, is framed as a powerful healing tool historically recognized by elders (“kapunas”) and now validated by science. The final quote encourages living fully and authentically—working, loving, dancing, and singing with abandon—as a metaphor for living “like it’s heaven on Earth.”

00:29
e e e e e helloha good morning I’m Jason from Mama Maui Arts and Music Association and I’m sitting here with some of the that you already know this is three singing Eagles she was on screen with me oh gosh it was November the only difference was it November OCT it was sometime long long ago in a galaxy far far away it was far far away when you saw her last time there was this huge stomach thing going on and uh you were off on a journey where were you going you remember do I remember oh my God I maybe
03:30
a Grandma but I’m not Seena yet okay Grandma where were you going yeah I went to the main I did I went to the mainland first I went to Kawaii to receive a healing and to become more quiet so I could be the listener and then I went to the mainland so that I could listen to people who felt that they had been forgotten what you may remember of course is that three singing Eagles was off to the mainland fully pregnant to CR at that time future choice of presidents we know we got bushed and so we have Bush instead of Gore and we had
04:08
no nater here we are and time has gone on did you make it all the way to Washington no you didn’t no but I collected a lot of good information although um somebody stole all of the audio tapes from my campsite at POA Point shortly after I came to Maui so if you have them or you got any information where they are are ain’t nobody going to be making money out of them and I’d like to send them along to the president although I’ll tell you I did not get to cassette record most people most in fact
04:42
I never got to put the sign up saying are you forgotten question mark about 5 minutes after I landed in San Francisco Airport somebody came up to me this old man with silver curly hair and just started talking and for the entire time that I was over there people just came to me sat down and started telling their story as if they’re St because someone’s revving their car engine and we don’t want to compete with that we’re back um I think before we go further I think it’s important to set
05:17
the uh the basis of what we’re talking about some of you have seen the other show and know exactly what we’re talking about about three singing Eagles trip to the mainland and others don’t could you give us a quick synopsis or you want me to why don’t you give your synopsis and if I’m not satisfied with it I’ll fill in the blanks okay okay uh we got together to share before you went on a trip she went on a trip to the mainland with the intention of traveling across the country and speaking with people
05:51
that felt that they were being forgotten in this country that they were falling through the cracks that all this talk of uh peace and and prosperity was wonderful but their lives were anything but peace and prosperity and uh there was no safety net as they were going through the challenges of life and what was happening with our economy and interpersonally and relations with people and so you went out to share these things in your time of Crisis while pregnant to deliver this message to our new president as whatever you’re
06:25
doing here Mr President uh we hope that you consider us an important part of of your mix you may have a tax benefit plan but what about those that don’t pay taxes because they can’t find work etc anyway is that pretty good synopsis it pretty much is although I had no idea the tax plan or even who the president would be at that point basically my feeling was that I was raised that the president during the four years Andor eight years that they are in office are the theoretical and Sy IC father of our
07:01
nation and that we are the children and that there’s a whole bunch of us kids that are completely forgotten and neglected and that um should be given the opportunity to tell the parent where the children are neglected and that they’re suffering once you have that information you might be able to help well theoretical before as far as what your journey would be like so when you got to San Francisco to start the first leg of the journey immediately you were inundated with people who were talking to you about how
07:39
they’re forgotten more than forgotten huh mhm yeah I have um kept the journal during the Journey of course and I have the entry from my first time in San Francisco it is 7:07 a.m. after landing in San Francisco was sitting near an information booth resting had been there no more than 5 minutes when a tall man with silver curly hair got up from his chair many rows over and sat down across from me three chairs down the chairs were black vinyl with armrests in rows there were only four people in the
08:21
large room it was a little past 900 p.m. there was no sign on me or my wheelchair yet yet I looked at him he smiled not broad but it qualified I smiled back polite but with the weary traveler’s dll patina then we started talking the silver-haired man slept stretched out in a row of chairs across from me he had been expecting someone to come looking for him a ride I suppose but I guess we missed each other he said as we sat outside sipping his warm herbal tea sipped from my cup Angel and roses and message of Friendship on it
09:08
warmed on my Sterno stove he spoke of this country comparing it sometimes to his home of Germany and to Russia where I spent some time he said that people were Overjoyed in Russia to sell three potatoes for butter and cheese they had so little for so long that even the little things were celebrated well you know as we’re doing this I’m realizing that you have a book here not only that I think we may have talked about it before but you you’re a writer you’re a playright and an author and a and a poetes yeah
09:57
celebrated one right recently as well as over time um these passages are very poetic and in reading them a lot comes out of it in fact I was thinking wow that’s really colorful so I’m was also thinking that here on television for you to tell me what’s going on would probably be most effective but you guys are going to have to check into the website are you going to put some of this on I’m yes today after the shoot I’ll be putting the journal on the website what is the web address just so
10:30
people can check in this is a web address so that you can check out some of the writings of three singing Eagles about her trip and about all kinds of things that have happened even since then well the easy route is to go to angelfire.com and type in faces of the Moon and then in their search engine that comes up on their opening page and then my web page will be at the top of the list I think there’s another faces of the moon now that’s some kind of Celtic Pagan site o but anyway faces of
11:05
the Moon all in capitals and the first line will be be here now and that’s my web page well we have another way that’s going to be even easier which I haven’t announced to you which is I I think we are going to put a link on the dream maui.com site for the mama TV shows that when we list your show we’re going to create a link on it so it goes directly to the page that you create as your homepage for this also the address will be at the end of this television show and as well my po. box will be there
11:41
because I realize that there are some people who do not have access to a computer the libraries has a free um internet access but there are people who are actually shut in to their home who are not able to get out to the library and I would like everybody to be able to have these this information we also will have the international Declaration of Human Rights and the patients Bill of Rights along with many treaties for human rights that will be posted on the listener one page so there’s going to be
12:13
a lot of information there that you might want to tap into the p. box is PO Box 2116 keii Hawaii you can even add Maui in there 96753 um and you can write uh care of singing Angels Productions if you want Singing Angels Productions or just put the PO Box in they’ll they’ll stick it in my box so to speak you guys The Listener one see I could tell that when you’re doing this you’re assuming that the audience knows what we’re talking about that’s right that’s why you’re
12:47
here to to remind me that people are are not always aware also I think it’s important give your PO box one more time cuz statistics will show that only 1% of our planet has a computer we think it’s all important because we’re all up to speed on this stuff maybe but a lot of people don’t have computer and access and this is an important message and we’ll also have it in the credits the opening and the closing credits but it is PO Box 2116 keii Hawaii 96753 they’re going to see it right in
13:22
front of their screen right now it’ll be scrolling scrolling scrolling la la la la la okay the list L The Listener The Listener she was going to listen to everyone’s story um this was your first meeting in San Francisco yeah but yet you had lots and lots of people talking what was what kind of messages did you hear what were people talking about there’s some very very interesting things going on on this planet um there are a lot of people that are forgotten in very many ways uh one of the most
13:57
interesting ones that stands out is I went and sat on a bench in Monteray California anyone who’s ever been there knows there’s a beautiful Lake there with choke geese and ducks and all kind so geese that means that means lots of geese yeah yeah plenty huh all right so um no not not geese being choked that’s why I’m saying you’re putting in slang which is fine I’m sure everyone after was going to say to me we know what she me bra but a lot of people don’t know these slang words so I’m trying to get
14:34
this message to be available to lots of people here and other places that’s choke geese many mucho a great mass of them a large amount of them there were there were a lot of geese there were a lot of them what and um so while I was drinking my first cup of morning coffee and watching the Plenty amount of geese one of the park workers came over and sat next to me and just started talking and one of the things he says is that he nearly got fired from his job for giving $10 to a homeless man in the park and he knew
15:14
this guy he knew that this man was working he was just short at the end of the week and was waiting for his paycheck a couple of days later needed some money for food one of his co-workers told on him it turns out that in many places on the m M land that if you give money to someone who is Indigent that you can get into mucho trouble and in fact he went on to tell me that every single Church in Monteray that he knows about was telling their parishioners not to give money to homeless people that the church will do
15:50
it through their organization or not but that what they’re doing is feeding into the homeless problem I don’t know if if uh all of our viewers are as aware as you are or I am or lots of people are about homeless if you’re watching a TV likely you’re in a home and uh there is a major issue now about homelessness and a lot of people that are in families and not only individuals not only individuals that have had uh inst that have been institutionalized that are now being freed and out there but just in general
16:32
it’s really significant that um the world needs to understand that this homeless problem is because of what because of not enough of something I think not enough sharing not enough understanding that uh we’re really all the same problem I can’t even understand why a church would make it important for you not to give I don’t get that what is that I don’t know and most of the world religion seem to to have some kind of idea in their literature or their faith or or their religion or their philosophy that says
17:15
that when you do acts of kindness to another human being in private we only you that person and God or the Divine or the Creator knows that that’s more holy than when you do it in public so to have a directive that says only the church in public where we’re recognized for doing charity can give charity and and you are should not give individual charity to someone that does not make any sense to me unfortunately Jason I do not have an answer for that I am totally perplexed I’m not I think that most people have
17:49
found that they need to put their own personal stamp on public religion this is no way to diminish the good works of the church but I think somehow in organizing religion uh we can forget there’s a very personal side with God or God through Jesus or however someone wants to to uh honor God um our society has really become so mechanized and so um set into genres that are not personal when we watching TV and we see things on a screen that aren’t real I mean how many times you look at a screen
18:36
over television and feel that those circumstances are not real and yet they become for many people the ideal of how they choose to live and those role models are there I don’t really even know how to put it it’s a society has started looking through screens like you’re doing here instead of being up close and personal about things when I see someone that’s hurting I try my best to stop and help and I know you do what other things did you hear as you were talking to people what themes were very
19:17
occurring we are really really lucky here in Hawaii guys if you happen to live here there are programs here in Hawaii that have much more funding and are much more compassionate than those on the mainland I will tell you right now that I was at a woman’s shelter in San Francisco that had 78 women there the Cs were right next to each other there was only enough blankets and sheets so you could have a blanket or a sheet there was there were not enough staff members there there were not enough counselors there were women
20:01
crying there were women screaming afraid nobody able to help them Milling about place was dirty it was cold what about here here we’ve got some really fine places we have places that if you’re addicted to alcohol or drugs you can go for help like what well first of all we have a lot of AA and NA meetings which are 12-step programs where you can really find some support and whether or not you know you mentioned the word god different than the mainland okay I’m trying to get a focus here on Maui you say it’s better
20:40
yet I know people that fall through the cracks here yes people fall through the cracks but there there are a lot of opportunities here and the fact that it’s warm year round here means that say you want to make a 12-step meeting say that you feel like 12ep meeting that means I guess they’re more alcoholics than I give life’s credit for AA and na are Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous a 12-step meeting means what means a meeting where you can participate and learn more about the
21:15
12-step programs and the 12 steps which can really help you to overcome addiction or well if not to overcome it see addiction is a disease and I would like to right now publicly make a call to to all professionals who are working in that field on Maui to please contact Jason and or I so that we can do a television show and you can make people aware of this because many people consider addiction to be a character defect still and it has been proven to be a disease and often genetically linked for a long time in the meantime
21:52
if anyone really wants to know about this uh Bill Moyers did an incredible special called closer to home uh that was inspired by the addiction problems of his son and um you know if you have a disease you’re often not demonized for it but with addiction if you don’t feel it’s a disease often people will go oh they’re killing themselves and just write off people with drug and alcohol abuse problems which is very prolific in our society it’s causing a lot of grief and sadness and illness and death and destruction of
22:31
property of self of other people and it can be arrested you know see it as a disease that can be put into remission and although you might have problems with the word God and God is in these 12-step programs and many people have used that excuse I myself do not believe in a Christian God with a long beard and long hair that lives in some pallets in heaven and is punishing and destroying and all of these other things that people might have been put in their head a really negative punishing God image so
23:04
you don’t like that word to me the word God is as pure as the word love people have misused the word love and polluted it but that doesn’t take away from the word love for me for me I stand up and say that word is pure and the word God is pure to me but don’t let the word god used in AA or na or any of these 12-step programs keep you from going and exploring them I would say seven meetings try seven meetings and if you still don’t like the program then bag out but those are free open to the
23:38
public and you can get there easily if it was on the mainland it might be too cold for you to get to a meeting there might not be Transportation there isn’t a lot of services we are totally lucky here okay well we’ve kind of shifted our Focus to uh drug and alcohol do you find that to be a common thing out there in homeless population I mean you’re bringing it up as such a main I can see your passion sounds like we could talk about that as a whole separate subject and we are going to do a separate show on that
24:11
after this one um but what I’m really trying to to get a feeling for is the general homeless population and who is being heard and who isn’t being heard then I’m going to jump right into some very specific things that have happened to you since you you were there and then here that’s what I’d like to do if we could in general cuz I would like to get a feeling for the homeless when you’re on the mainland this probably has commonality to hear what are the bottom lines what is needed and how do we uh
24:45
what do the people that are homeless tell you they need if I remember that was part of what your original scenario was was tell me uh what’s ailing you and what Solutions you might have you know I often I feel that when people are homeless and with challenge others that are looking on think of them as people that don’t have a brain and don’t have ability and there’s I’ve amazed at the people that are homeless that have no job no work people that are very very educated many of them and have a lot to
25:22
say and a lot to give the people in our society that think that people that are homeless are separate from the eles separate from all of us are missing a huge point of the god whatever form and definition you you know whether they’re powerful in the sky or however you there is something missing ah they’re cooking something good next time um we’re getting distracted by culinary sense here let’s get focused Jason well really it’s important for me when I’m doing this go to to get on sort of a wrapup of what
26:02
the mainland trip and The Listener saw and then I want to get personal well we might have to wait till the next show to get personal we’ll see because there’s a lot that I found on my journey but um more will be revealed if we don’t get to it in this hour there’ll be some more and certainly you can email me to the email address will be at the end of the program if you want any more information on anything you ask a hell of a lot of questions there Jason also you know you can wait till the end of
26:33
the show but these guys know me already I flash stuff up on the screen early by the time they get to the end of the show and the credits they don’t remember they wanted the email while we’re here check out you’ll see the email there it is see it there it is listener one hotmail.com okay or at Hotmail yeah I asked a lot of questions cuz it’s it’s the kind of subject where you know we can take each little piece and look at it or we can just give a long laundry list the issues here require a lot more
27:06
depth than we’re given it I want to do an overview I know that people can come up to you and share with you on your website and through writing and through us you see we hope to be a vehicle so that you can get information to enrich your life and to help enrich the lives of the people that you see around here who have challenges it bothers me come constantly of people I know that are very talented that are without resources and don’t find help through the system you may think the system is better here
27:40
and I haven’t had to deal with them and they may be a jewel compared to other places but I see people who don’t go for food stamps because they have a problem with something else they don’t have food or they have too much money in the bank by some system that says you you have if you have that much you don’t get any benefits well in fact we know I know you know that you need a lot more than that much money in the bank to be considered you have any money it’s ridiculous I think it’s just gets to point of absurd
28:14
or uh the food bank that only gives out a little food and they give garbage out why because they’re not getting quality products in so the whole system has got to be redone how it’s evaluated what’s good and bad um I am personally affronted by it every time I I find myself helping lots of people I look at my taxes and I see I made all that money doing mortgage and real estate and now I have major amount of taxes and I don’t have the money why cuz I’ve been helping people virally
28:48
constantly because people are falling through the cracks well you mentioned something about um food and shelter and stuff and here in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which by the way is not something new this was um put together in 1948 and signed and ratified by most of the planet Universal Declaration of Human Rights uh this is sitting on a website FR of you guys to the United Nations what is this about go ahead want to read us a few pieces yes um well first of all I wanted to write uh to
29:25
read something that you were just talking about article 25 everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family including food clothing housing and medical care and necessary social services and the right to Security in the event of unemployment sickness disability widowhood old age or other lack of livelihood in in circumstances Beyond his control but just because you have the right doesn’t mean these resources are readily available a lot of people
30:08
hold on to their own personal resources and they’re buying and putting themselves behind walls and they’re isolating themselves from others there’s the this the Us and Them syndrome that seems so prevalent so you have the right now that you have the right now what there’s also other civil rights and human rights that are in here and also in the patients Bill of Rights that you have medically that are causing a lot of complexity in this first of all we’ve got welfare reform which basically means
30:39
you’re kicked off of welfare in a certain period of time so that right is gone we also have uh privacy the right to a certain amount of privacy and when you apply for many of these things your privacy is um is severely violated if you do not ask answer certain questions including who the fathers of your children are meaning who your sexual partners have been for many people who have children out of wedlock and the protection of children all across the planet including those born out of wedlock are in this
31:14
Universal Declaration of Human Rights but there’s also another thing that that is causing a great deal of discomfort among people if you do not have children and you are applying for welfare now you must get a psychiatric evaluation basically saying that you are disabled that you are unable to work for a certain period of time and you must follow treatment now often this treatment means that you are going to be prescribed psychotropic drugs drugs that are meant to um make you available to the workforce say that that you’re
31:51
severely depressed perhaps you’ve lost everything you own and I know this might be really uncomfortable for many people who are watching right now but it does not matter if right now you’re sitting in a mansion likee home on beachfront property on Maui you are one event away from being homeless from being destitute from losing everything that you have whether or not you want to hear that and whether or not you feel that you are immune from it you are not and I will tell you that that many people have
32:27
found themselves in this situation who never thought that they would be there ever well you know what I’m hearing you I remember your story to me where you told me that you were ready to move in somewhere with your kids and the day before they told you oops sorry we rented it to someone else well it was 3 days before to be exact but yes I called to uh get the key to my new house I was moving from a three-bedroom house here I was I was a full-time student at MCC 4.0 grade point average on the
33:04
President’s List the dean list I had three children who went to school had perfect attendance um were doing moderately well in their studies but then again I believe in a well-rounded education which means you don’t have to get straight A’s I was severely pushed to be like at the top of my class when I was young so I wasn’t about to do that with my kids and and we had a lot of play time so I’m not saying I’m not going to you and say that my kids were straight A students but they
33:32
had perfect attendance we had you know a relatively clean home and all right it wasn’t perfectly clean but then again I was going to school fulltime you know and um it’s very difficult as a single parent to keep your home perfectly spotless mine definitely was very hang loose but be that as it may you know I had this nice three bedroom home in Hau I had HUD which is a housing assistance program rented another place by the way many of these rental agencies charge $25 or more for you to just apply for a
34:09
place those kind of things rental agencies that if you look in the paper and it’s you have to go to the rental agency and pay an application fee those are private companies you’re talking about yes well they have rent I I mean maybe to you it’s significant and it is significant but there might be some other uh help that isn’t a private company that has to pay for their rent pay for their phones they’re in business I appreciate what you’re saying that it’s it’s a burden for you when you’re
34:42
looking for a place there’s a lack of rentals there’s a lack of rentals to such a degree that I think there should be some state or County function to help anyway I appreciate that okay but Jason when you’re talking about 40 to 50 people applying first day for a place and each of them is paying 25 bucks to apply and only one of them is going to get the house this sounds like there’s something just a little bit wrong with this to me let me tell you that’s a little excessive I know but let me tell
35:10
you here’s a little information maybe you didn’t know this I know you might not enlighten me baby okay when someone checks your credit how much you think that costs them I don’t know how much oh good $25 for a credit check yeah see now when they do a a background in credit check and you have 40 or 50 people it’s sad that there are 40 or 50 people looking for one place and um when these people do at least well the thing that I don’t like in what your scenario is is they’ve
35:42
made a decision and they take money from 40 or 50 people and then do they Place those people no that’s not part of the deal so once they come to a decision giving someone’s their money back might be appropriate unless there’s another place that’s to me is a scam but there’s a level of that I understand that someone checks credit you know I’m in the mortgage business so I I know that there’s criteria that that you have to live by and if you’re an agency handling a rental for someone uh there’s some
36:15
level of certainty that the owner of that property would like to have before someone goes in there and those fees to check that stuff out does cost it’s outrageous the whole society is structured on that I mean I don’t want to get too off on a tangent but I think the problems are way bigger than a a fee I think the problems are way bigger than the fact that some agencies charging it we have 40 or 50 people looking for one place and no matter why we’re here now I mean I could blame the former mayors
36:54
administrations for not enough appropriate housing a council that lets a developer choose whether they want to put some money in the pot or build appropriate low-income housing and how do you define low income a house for $200,000 is not a loow income housing or affordable house for someone that can’t pay their rent I mean anyway what’s the expression don’t get me started I am started the reason you’re here with me is I’m very passionate about the tremendous needs that people have which I know you
37:30
were when I did yard work for a few months here on Maui I was shocked and I’m not sure if everybody’s aware of this as to how many houses are vacant almost the entire year and people only stay for a few weeks or a month in these places I know I know it’s amazing oh my God and some people and you might be one of these do you own like five six seven houses and apartments around the planet it’s amazing you know Jason you gave me um this this paper that was sent to you and I’d like to read this in a second
38:06
but I also want to quickly respond to you that just to close up this whole rental agreement thing and that story that you feel that it’s appropriate to have a a $25 initial fee because of the credit check but then to charge $25 for each application for place after that when they’ve already done that it gets me that these agencies take in this money when from everyone when only one person is getting it mhm and just like in real estate I don’t know how realtors feel but for sale by owner
38:44
sometimes you can sell your house without a realtor the realtor gets a nice big juicy healthy fee for having your house up for sale sometimes that’s appropriate cuz there is work involved in selling a house but there’s all these fees and we’re creating industries from things from our own personal crisis from our need and lack we need housing so because there’s so many people now we have an agency or some group in the middle to kind of control the action it’s very challenging like you need to
39:15
you have a fee just to get your own money out of the bank through an ATM some of those fees are going up up up and yet the cost of providing these Services go up up up you know that’s the thing it’s like I our society is creating more specialization I think may you know a lot because there’s so many people if we don’t specialize then we’ll have lots of people that are that are trying to compete for the same thing so if we keep specializing specializing specializing you know we create a
39:47
specialty someone can take a position I don’t know I don’t know what’s going on here with this well and it’s kind of overwhelming do you remember during the’ 70s when we had the gas crisis how they showed that all of the gas pumps or almost all of them in the country were charging an extra Penny without giving that extra Penny of gasoline at some point and they found they figured out how many millions of dollars every day the gas companies were making now when you talk about a $1 fee
40:19
how much does it cost in electricity and other things to to run these ATMs how much are the banks making now you’re talking about the $25 for for the credit check I don’t believe that all 40 to 50 people and we’re talking about 100 or 200 people by the end of the first week that the ad has run we’re just talking 40 to 50 people applying on the first day now how many do you think they check the credit they already more than likely have crossed off a whole bunch of people off their
40:49
list from the first day in fact by the way it used to be that if you had pets you got to the bottom of the list as far as potential rent now it has gotten to such a situation here that if you have children you actually go below pet owners inure in fact if any of you out there in these businesses we welcome hearing you and having an opportunity for you to be here and share here with us please um I think what we keep seeing is that prejudice and people’s own circumstance and preserving of their
41:28
uh their own circumstances stops them from being sensitive to things that are around people with children people with pets I mean I know people looking for months because they have a dog or a cat it’s ridiculous I’ve seen people let their cats and dogs go which is inhumane you know why because they can’t find a place to live I I really think that there’s this thing is way larger than you and me you know that and and it’s larger than you but we have to start speaking up and doing things and making
42:03
our own personal stand our own personal involvement in helping people I mean I I don’t think I understand how a church would stop me from helping because they help that just is too much for me to deal with and as far as pets go I’ve been a home health aid and I’m going to be getting recertified in Hawaii soon and I will tell you for a lot of people who are shut inss and especially the elderly to have a pet to love can mean the difference between severe depression and mental health and and that will
42:38
close up the the thing that I was talking about before about people being severely depressed when you lose everything sometimes severe depression can set in it’s natural if you weren’t depressed you’d be mentally ill and now these people need a little help for a few months the only way they’re going to get it is to be evaluated by a psychiatrist the psychiatrist says you’re severely depressed well no du you’ve just lost everything you owned you’re living on the street you have no
43:08
money you’re applying for welfare which you never thought you were going to in your life yes you’re depressed that’s natural oh let me give you some medication and often these medications as we well know once you start them you’re on them for life or else you can be really screwed up we saw it on TV when we were just watching last evening we were watching TV and there’s drugs like paxel you know paxel for CU you’re depressed they put you on drugs and they read the list of side effects and you
43:39
wonder how they could be offering at all this kind of a product because people are depressed do we handle things in society to lower our depression to give us a more natural root out how many people on TV are drinking remember they made this big thing about smoking on TV what about drinking on TV when we look at statistics and we see people in our own Community very close people that we know that are being killed through abuse of alcohol that they themselves do but they’re encouraged there’s all these
44:13
bars there’s all the things that are encouraging it it’s things are out of control I mean in my way of thinking when I first became sober and stopped drinking about eight or nine years ago or at least uh work towards it and I’ve had stretches of sobriety and I’ve had times that I have lapsed and I started becoming immediately aware because I was watching this one soap opera about how many scenes in the soap opera people are drinking they either got a glass right in their hand or
44:48
alcohol in the room all over the place and you might want to try an experiment either for a day or even more enlightening for a week all the TV that you watch during the week write down how many times drugs and alcohol are on the screen and and put an asri next to every time that they’re being promoted as a use to stop your feelings because the message is if you’re feeling something uncomfortable take a drug or a drink to stop it well what do you do if you don’t do that I’m just putting it out there you
45:27
walk through your feelings you cry when you feel like crying so we get a little bit more personal and a little more real with our lives yeah and maybe a sympathy to someone that is going through a circumstance we can take some action I don’t know I’m I harp on it I think CU it’s so significant to me how many people uh find a need for help that never thought they’d be in those circumstance ances and I mean just is amazing you know um we’re not going to get to it this show so watch out but we’re going
46:06
to be talking more about your circumstances and you know I had call from professors and from uh others who are just in shock because they don’t know what to do to help you they didn’t know what to do you were going through a crisis and you’re going through a crisis we all wanted to help but for your protection supposedly you’re blocked away from any help in our society where we think we have freedom you didn’t have freedom and I don’t know about this innocent until proven guilty guilty or innocent you
46:40
needed help in fact your story is going to be a I think a bit shocking to a lot of people oh yeah you can actually be um treated like a prisoner even if you’re not guilty of a crime in this country and um in this state and it will be very interesting for you to hear my story um but one story that we haven’t finished that we did start was the story of how I became homeless just to show you that nobody is immune to this crap all right I had this wonderful place I had HUD I had Social Services I was on welfare
47:19
taking care of my kids as best as I could not perfect by the way okay and if you’re perfect come on and show me how I’d love to learn you know but um no I’m not some perfect mother perfect housewife perfect Saint or anything I was doing pretty damn good and I paid the $25 fee and ID actually gotten this place to rent and 3 days before I was to move in I called the rental agent to ask for the key and where we could like meet each other I’m packed up I got everything all ready to go and she says
47:56
to me oh didn’t anyone call and tell you the landlord didn’t want to fix up the things that were broken to you know up to HUD standards and we’re talking HUD standards is you don’t have any broken windows no broken screens all the electrical outlets work that’s I mean that’s basically it things that are that just are basic health sanitation and safety things in a house basically the place was a broken down slum and and the slum landlord did not want to fix it up so what happened to basic human
48:29
conditions they found someone who would rent it in that condition because the rental situation is so tight they rented it to someone else and suddenly I had no place to go and um I was told by this rental agent who was really sweet lady and very apologetic I’m not sure exactly where I fell through the cracks that phrase is being used a lot here isn’t it people just slipping through the cracks and and uh where I fell through the cracks that nobody had called me or Britten me or given me any
49:03
notice that suddenly this house was not mine that I was planning to move into so you were homeless with kids I’m homeless with three kids all right so she says well you can come in and pay another $25 fee and I’ll try to get you this two-bedroom down the road from there I might understand that $25 fee is on every place you apply for yes oh this I didn’t understand yes that’s crazy yes I I didn’t get that every place is a every place and I paid the fee and never got the two-bedroom by the way just to sum
49:34
it up quickly okay and ended up at an old friend’s house and um anyone who’s ever stayed with friends knows that it can be quite a nightmare and um I’d love to tell you my entire story but we got some more important things to do I did want to talk about basically you were saying only one person in a 100 owns a computer yeah and um you received this thing on Friendship Day this this informational email email which I’d like to be able to have a copy of is that possible to put on on The Listener one’s
50:14
homepage an electronic copy okay so we’ll have a copy of this and it’s a lot longer than this but this was something kind of interesting that I would just like everybody listening right now if you’re listening to this you probably have a TV I doubt very much if you’re like in a bar or a restaurant watching this on their TV probably if you’re in a bar or restaurant there’s going to be ESPN on so if you’re watching Public Access right now it’s more than likely you have a home and a television or at
50:45
least you’ve got some good buddies that have a home and a TV so this is something to ponder then if you woke up this morning with more Health than illness you’re more blessed than the million who will not survive this week if you have never experienced the danger of battle the loneliness of imprisonment the agony of torture or the pangs of starvation you are ahead of 500 million people on this planet right now if you can attend a church meeting without fear of harassment arrest torture or
51:35
death you are more blessed than three billion people in the world 3 billion if you have food in the refrigerator clothes on your back a roof over your head and a place to sleep you are richer than 75% of the people on this planet right now if you have money in the bank in your wallet and spare change in a dish someplace you are among the top 8% of the world’s wealthy those knock out statistics but I think uh the bottom line is we’re blessed we’re all blessed and even those that don’t have are blessed we’re here
52:38
in Hawaii you know but what do we do with that blessing do we turn around and share and help each other that’s the part I want to see happen more I would like to think that our society here can come to grips with giving and sharing more and stopping um I can’t imagine that someone that’s building a home for four5 $600,000 house can’t somehow give more enforce giving you know some people will say well we’re in the land of the free we’ve earned it well these people haven’t worked who are they to want what
53:24
we have there’s this thing from the heart that seems to be missing I just wish we could get back to that and there’s also in Kawaii when I was over there um allegedly to go and do a healing on my womb with Serge King who’s a Kahuna over there thanks Serge if you’re watching this hopefully this program will go over to aahu and Kawaii on the the little um bicycle that it goes on and and hi Serge love you but I allegedly went there for healing and one of the things that I found out was that
54:03
they have an incredible system for camping there where there are certain parks that are designated for camping free for residents Kamas as the local vernacular says and $3 a night for visitors for tourists that come from other places and each beach park is closed one day a week for maintenance and cleanup so that there is no health hazards like as recently as happened at kaha beach park and it creates a flow of people so people don’t really stay there and live there and expand their lives there right exactly yes and there’s a
54:42
separate camping area so that the park is not monopolized by homeless people quote unquote or campers and um many of these people end up being like an Ohana making an extended family with other people in fact it this was right before Christmas that I was in Kawaii and the Sugar Mill had closed down and come the first there were a whole bunch of families that were there that had lost their jobs one paycheck away from homelessness for most of us hello and the feeling of ohana was incredible you know I do not have
55:20
rosecolor glasses on at this point in my life I’ve become through bitter experience experience I’ve become quite aami and I’m not going to tell you that we were Smiley happy people holding hands unless we were and we were there’s a real sense of ohana and family and often um little family groups would form among the campers that would move from campsite to campsite together and have support one person some of them also many people are working who are homeless our whole society we’re at a point where you know
55:56
when I asked that question I thought to myself well these people are now living and moving in groups from campsite to campsite becomes a major thing just to live how do you work when you’re trying to figure out where you are for the day or night one of the things you had mentioned is about the drug and alcohol problem among the homeless and I am here to testify from personal experience and observation that there is more drug and alcohol use among people who have homes where they can do it in private it and
56:27
not be seen than among the homeless who are extremely vulnerable when they get stoned and drunk and loaded I will tell you that it is more visible among the homeless but there is more abuse of children and spouses in the home there is more abuse of alcohol in the private homes behind closed doors there is more abuse of drugs inside houses period And if you disagree and you have a different opinion or you have any statistics you want to whip out and have out on TV you contact me and Jason but I will tell you
57:02
I have been inside homes and I have also been among the homeless among the campers and the Vagabonds and I will tell you that there is less percentage of people who are out there period who are using alcohol and drugs and their R in private homes that is my experience well we’re running low on the hour we’ve got a couple yeah look at that I I think uh you see that flashing that means in a minute this thing’s going to turn off so I’d like you to if you could sum up the time that we’ve said here
57:36
um obviously more needs to be said and we’ll be back together and separate on TV and we hope others will join us in being a loud voice not only loud but uh hopefully effective by all of us getting together to make some changes or help each other more personally please bust the stereotypes of being homeless and realize that many of the people who cannot get housing have the money for housing they just cannot find it many are going to school sometimes full-time sometimes doing really good also almost all of the people who are
58:22
homeless who I’ve met on Maui have jobs and are working so we’re not talking about people who are just deciding that they just want to live on the beach and live off the grid and live off the system and are enjoying sucking out your tax money if you pay taxes and you’re feeling resentful about this I’d really like for you to let that go right now I also promised during the last show that I would read that quote from Leo Balia I’m do not have time to do that now so it will be up on the web page
58:55
well we can make the time to do that now want to do that now can we Balia H hang on Leo Balia you know we were talking before about the fear of reaching out and helping people but I want to say if you’re afraid to reach out and help other people Andor you’re being told by your church or anyone else not to do it but you still have that urge in your heart to do it I would encourage you to make the leap and help others and it is a risk it is like jumping off a a precipe and not knowing if you’re going
59:29
to land on your feet sometimes it’s very scary but um I would encourage you to go for it and it might even be some motive that’s just as selfish as you never know when you’re going to need the help fine I don’t really give a damn what your motives are as far as I’m concerned it’s time for us to help one another right now I need help on camera so we can do this and you’ll see me sitting in one place please go ahead you know from here the reason I’m running around and talking about I’m going to
01:00:04
nakuna om Maui and going with them on a March you would think that in our group of people here you out there people have to cover more events people come at me to cover all kinds of things because they think I’m part of Public Access television and that Public Access television will cover events I’m an individual I’m not part of akaku public access and it is not their responsibility to cover events it’s you all I’m here because I’m passionate about what we’re talking about so I’m
01:00:39
going to take a little more time and I really want to uh not break away from what we’re doing I’m going to have to in in just a little bit by my circumstance so please appreciate that okay all right well since Jason brought it up both Jason and I are are certified producers at Public Access that means that if anyone watching this show has footage and I know a lot of people have video cameras now whether it’s half inch or digital we can put it on the air you do not have to go through the training at
01:01:13
akaku to get your footage on the air so right now even if you’re not a producer at akaku if you’ve not been through any professional video training if you have footage of an event in the community or anything else that you believe ought to be on public access if you want to set up the camera and talk about things like I’m doing right now and share your Mano and give your opinion which by the way everything said in this show is my opinion I own it it’s not necessarily the truth in any form or another it’s my
01:01:46
personal truth get out of it what you want leave the rest you don’t have to swallow everything I’m saying this is my opinion and if you want your opinion here all you got to do is videotape yourself have someone else videotape you videotape events around the community there’s not just a couple of us that that have to hold this torch and run through the community but I know for one if you want to send your footage to me and have me sponsor your footage and probably Jason will too I’m not going to
01:02:18
speak for him but knowing Jason he probably will too all we got to do is fill out the forms sign it and get your footage on we don’t have to go and videotape every event you can do it and we can get it on as producers and in that we should also acknowledge akaku um and people at akaku that work there have put together Maui County news and so they’re looking for coverage of events so please you can call akaku as well Tom Blackburn Rodriguez is uh there with Andrea Dean on screen and there’s a
01:02:54
whole full crew now that’s putting Weekly News but there’s a lot more that needs to be covered why am I running out to cover something why because we’re going to do some in-depth interviews with people people want to know I I keep thinking that it’s lack of awareness that creates the big problem so that’s what this is this is our little hit of awareness I’m just shocked this issue that we’re talking about needs a lot more conversation and action than it’s getting anyway why don’t you give us Leo
01:03:24
Balia Leo Balia I think that’s how you pronounce it pascala yeah P if you know how to properly pronounce Leo’s last name please contact me I’m sure that Leo would forgive okay as long as we get this on um but I did want to quickly close up what you just said too yes it’s a good point in at aaku uh this new news program and many other programs that are done in the studio also have a way if you do not have a camera or access to a camera for you to come on in and say your opinion there’s also speak out Saturdays and
01:04:05
those are advertised in the newspapers even the local weeklys which are free so you don’t have to buy a Maui News to receive the information that that it’s coming up you can call akaku and they will tell you when the speak out Saturday is happening now I believe at this point there’s a signup sheet and often there’s so many people that want to speak out that it gets filled up really quick quickly so um call akaku I think you can visit their website as well the number is in the phone book
01:04:33
make use of 5554 871 5554 uh akaku is AK a.org anyway I’m we’re getting off course because we can go on for a long time and I need to go up and see the capona because there’s yet another thing that has to be covered yes see Elders have quite a lot to speak about that can that can give us a great deal of Enlightenment and I do encourage everybody to listen to the Capas and listen to the elders um our society has kind of degenerated a little that we want to shove many of our elders away
01:05:11
and not look at them but um being able to look and to listen is um very worthy Endeavor don’t you think so Jason I do you know I’m sitting here I’m thinking it was only a little while ago when we were on TV you were C in such a different Persona a more mild Persona one where you were pregnant with child a lot has happened to you I can feel your power surging back to you you were powerful then but you were really on a very delicate delicate Road your whole circumstance like I say needs a lot more
01:05:49
personal attention here in this media uh and we’ll get to it please let’s hear about Leo or Leo’s uh quote okay yes my eyes have changed and they’ve seen some incredible things and I’ve become a lot more of a fire brand this is true all right so basically what we were speaking about in the last show and hopefully we’ll be able to repeat that as well for people who have not seen it um maybe even adjacent to this show and and before it but if you haven’t again you can contact
01:06:26
us and we can try to find a way to make a copy available to you or I will at least if you really need it okay okay but one of the things that we were speaking about was the the walls that we build between each other and our fear and a lot of it has come from our culture just as we were speaking about um being able to cry and and the culture saying Big Girls Don’t Cry and big boys definitely don’t cry they don’t even think of crying whereas tears are very healing and science has indeed proven
01:07:02
that emotional tears are completely different in chemical composition from tears caused by irritant such as dust and onions and black pepper in the air and so that that emotional tears are filled with toxins and it’s a physical as well as emotional cleansing every time you cry so when Grandma our ancient Kap punas used to say have a good cry come here lean on my shoulder and cry it’s good for you Grandma was right and scientists have proven it now good idea to listen to the kapuna huh scientists might prove the Capas is
01:07:41
being very wise in the future for you who are scientifically minded all right let’s get to Leo yes our culture is constantly teaching us to be suspicious not to trust not to believe to be afraid of everything what we’re doing is we’re building we’re building higher and higher and higher walls to protect us from each other I don’t ever want to be protected from you I want to just dive right in the middle of you I want to experience you I don’t want to be protected from you I’ll Trust And if there are one or
01:08:28
two of you who smack me along the way that’s okay but I don’t want to miss you never that scares me most but our culture keeps telling us these things the person next to you can’t be trusted we don’t even know our neighbors and that’s a shame because what are we doing we’re telling telling our children also that they must not trust and we’re becoming more and more separated from each other it’s time we start to build little Bridges thank you Leo one last quote also that I want to close with which
01:09:19
will also be on the web page along with Leo’s quote that I just read this is is um at the tail end of that email that that talked about how blessed you might be if you actually have a roof over your head clothing food Etc someone once said what goes around comes around work like you don’t need the money love like you’ve never been hurt dance like nobody’s watching sing like nobody’s listening live like it’s heaven on Earth e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e
