Summary & Transcript

Jason Schwartz” (Week of April 18, 2021)

[00:0007:37] Introduction and Current Events Reflection

  • [00:00] Jason Schwartz opens the show, introducing himself as the host of The Neutral Zone on Maui, available on radio (KAKU 88.5 FM), community TV (Akaku Maui), YouTube, and the website mauineutralzone.com. He emphasizes the wide availability of the show and its mission to share positive and constructive content from Maui to the world.
  • [01:07] This episode is a personal reflection as Jason recently turned 70. He intends to share how his current activities relate to the people of Maui and global well-being.
  • [01:55] Jason touches on the troubling rise of mass shootings and violence in the U.S., lamenting the senseless loss of life and the deep societal divisions fueling conflict. He calls for focusing on what unites rather than divides, highlighting a need for love and cooperation.
  • [04:13] The set backdrop includes symbolic art and logos representing Maui arts, music, cultural associations, and positive community action groups, underscoring the show’s commitment to culture and cooperation.
  • [05:37] Jason announces upcoming shows focused on art and music, emphasizing collaboration with local organizations like the Maui Arts and Cultural Center and the Maui Arts and Music Association. These will feature live and recorded performances, respecting COVID-19 social distancing protocols.
  • [06:53] He stresses the importance of public health measures (masks, distancing) as acts of mutual care amid the pandemic, regardless of differing beliefs about COVID-19.
  • [07:37] Jason introduces a special environmental project: a feasibility study funded by the county to test an innovative technology called the Earth Power Lodge, developed by Michael Smith and Diane Carter from Montana. This project focuses on soil regeneration and sustainable waste management.

[07:3716:52] Soil Regeneration and Regenerative Technology (Regenetech)

  • [07:37] Jason refers to a prior interview (Show #78, February 2020) with Michael Smith, highlighting the Earth Power Lodge’s capability to transform green waste into valuable soil amendments using a process called pyrolysis—heating organic material without oxygen to extract phytochemicals and produce biochar.
  • [09:25] The process sequesters carbon in the soil, promotes nutrient retention, and accelerates natural soil regeneration from centuries to just a few cycles, addressing critical concerns about soil depletion and food security.
  • [10:59] Jason emphasizes the urgency: only about 60 crop cycles remain globally before topsoil degradation threatens food production. Regenerative agriculture through technologies like pyrolysis is vital for sustainable farming.
  • [11:37] These innovations offer a pathway to restore natural soil, improve air quality, and support organic food growth, preserving the environment for future generations.
  • [13:01] The Maui Arts and Music Association website (mauiartsandmusic.org) now features an environment section sharing these developments. The Regenetech system is designed as a no-waste, closed-loop technology that integrates multiple systems for maximum efficiency.
  • [14:22] The project aligns with Maui’s eco-tourism and agro-tourism trends, reflecting a decades-long vision for sustainability that Jason has championed since his 1994 Green Party mayoral campaign.
  • [15:01] Jason advocates for collaboration over conflict, urging political and community leaders to unite to combat climate change and environmental degradation. He expresses hope that natural air, soil, and food production can be preserved despite ongoing challenges.
  • [16:18] The feasibility study is seen as a promising model for county waste management, aiming to transform waste into a sustainable resource loop, which could serve as a global example from Hawaii’s remote island setting.

[20:1028:43] Continuing Environmental Conversations and Hydrogen Technology

  • [20:10] Jason returns to the show after a break, continuing to position himself as the recurring guest to share insights from his many interviews on art, healing, music, culture, and environment.
  • [21:26] He discusses the need for local manufacturing and scientific education to support cutting-edge technologies like Regenetech on Maui, fostering self-sufficiency and economic sustainability on the island.
  • [22:09] Jason reflects on the potential of island-based industries to create valuable, meaningful products distinct from mainstream US economic models.
  • [23:29] He acknowledges some skepticism around climate change but stresses the importance of collaborative, inclusive solutions that benefit everyone.
  • [23:29] Upcoming interviews will include experts like Tyler LeBaron, head of the Molecular Hydrogen Institute, focusing on molecular hydrogen’s health benefits.
  • [24:08] Jason explains the significance of hydrogen and HHO (a form of plasma hydrogen) technologies, which hold potential for revolutionizing health and energy sectors worldwide.
  • [24:48] He encourages engagement through his website and phone contact, envisioning Maui as a global exemplar in sustainable technology and health innovation.
  • [28:43] Jason briefly highlights how hydrogen therapy (HHO) is being used internationally, including in China to help ventilator patients, and its anti-inflammatory properties.

[33:3445:23] Food Security, Community Collaboration, and Holistic Vision

  • [33:34] Jason discusses local food security initiatives, referencing programs like Ohana Gardens that promote growing one’s own food in Hawaii.
  • [34:22] He plays a song called “Stardust Road,” co-written by himself and Don Gear, reflecting personal and collective journeys. Music is presented as a medium to inspire and connect the community.
  • [41:06] Jason reiterates the show’s availability online and invites viewers to request guests or topics via email.
  • [42:32] He critiques mainstream media and political systems for prioritizing profit over cooperation, contrasting this with island values of mutual contribution and self-sustainability.
  • [43:16] Jason stresses that everyone has something valuable to offer, even just goodwill, which can transform everyday life and community resilience.
  • [44:01] Returning to Regenetech, he explains the full cycle of the technology: producing methane and hydrogen from algae, using pyrolysis to extract phytochemicals, and creating biochar as a soil additive—all part of a profitable, sustainable business model.
  • [45:23] He encourages viewers to explore Regenetech and Maui Arts and Music Association websites to learn more and support these initiatives as part of the global movement to save the planet.

[45:2346:15] Closing and Community Music

  • [45:23] Jason concludes with a musical segment featuring “Maui Stylin’” by Lono, a Hawaiian ukulele master and teacher based on Molokai. The song celebrates Hawaiian culture and community spirit.
  • [46:15] The show closes with expressions of gratitude and a hopeful call for unity, sustainability, and creativity on Maui and beyond.

[Music] aloha my name is jason schwartz i’m your host here at the neutral zone mauineutralzone.com we are on kaku 88.5 fm the voice of maui we’re on akaku maui community media at selected times that they put us on and we are on youtube all the time and can always be found at mauineutralzone.com where you can see all of our shows and we’ve got a lot of shows well this is the week of april 18th 2021 uh 2021 that always amazes me well um i have a guest and that guest today is jason schwartz

01:07
i only know him for uh 70 years he was 70 years old on april 11. and i thought to do a uh a self-reflection and show you some of the things that i’m involved in now and how they all relate to you the people of maui and the people of the world because that is the vision to share positive things to the world from here on beautiful maui so let’s get started well there have been a lot of things in the news this week um these shows are going to be in a library so i sometimes talk about current events and

01:55
sometimes uh we’re just talking about good things that are i don’t want to say timeless because we need to get on them all but um we have been watching in america over the last month numbers of mass shootings there’s a very sad story that people are out there killing each other and killing each other with automatic weapons and killing each other with no good reason and killing each other by accident or killing each other because they are afraid of something they see as a police officer

02:36
and they want to react i guess you’d say they’d like to respond but many times you find that people react and then the outpouring of incredible love for the people that have been taken down mercilessly sometimes and accidentally sometimes but any kind of violence and murder not good game for me and i hope most of the people in the world see the same thing yet we see there’s been a lot of murder and a lot of war we watch the way people fight each other on so many fronts whether it’s

03:23
we need to have us and what we need and so much for the other guy or well they’ll have to take care of their own and there’s this real separation and isolation that i see happening a lot uh we had political leaders uh trump shall be left nameless as one who are encouraging distraction and distortion encouraging the idea that we don’t have freedom encouraging the idea that we don’t have uh self freedoms um anyway that’s for another whole discussion because we’re here to see

04:13
what we agree on what we can make better and that’s what you’ll see when you see my guests i would say without exception i bring people on to see what they have to say to make this a better world you see behind me we have uh kermit the frog still holding on to his covered mask and there’s another variation down below a cloth mask and there’s the the what can we see behind me of the mermaid sitting on the top there that’s a richard fields piece i feel like john travolta with my finger

04:53
then from the movie saturday night fever richard fields and then there are three logos the maui arts and music association and dream makers foundation and people aligned in positive action mama and papa and the dream makers foundation and uh then you see funny looking over there down below we see a piece called the infinite infinite way by chris lassen that was in the middle of our original logo when we put it out there in 1991 chris lassen’s work was in the middle and maybe again we’re going to be showcasing and

05:37
doing a lot more shows for art and we’re going to be doing shows for music on our website mauiartsandmusic.org we feel very fortunate to be sitting on the web right next to the maui arts and cultural center mauiarts.org and i think that at some point we’ll be affiliating in some coordinated way but right now they’re doing shows on saturday night and then archiving them there at their site of different performances performances by people and at our site we’re going to be starting and doing

06:14
live shows and recording performances and we’re going to be doing them at numbers of locations at the appropriate distances because we’re still honoring the social distancing necessary to get rid of this covent problem i am a firm believer that whether you believe in covet or not if it’s socially responsible to maintain a distance and wear a mask i think it’s the right thing to do i think that we have to honor each other and show each other that we care about each other by wearing masks by staying socially

06:53
distant by also when someone has a need helping fill it there’s a lot of homelessness on maui before this covet issue but there’s even more now and the way things are being handled in my opinion are very very very poor and there are so many omissions in the system so many things that need to be corrected i uh i’m saving it for another day because i think today i want to talk about good things i am i’ve been busy all week i’ve been busy all week and for a handful of weeks now

07:37
michael smith and partner diane carter are in from montana there is a feasibility study that the county was putting out money for uh in a grant to test the efficacy of something that has been used successfully another place michael smith hasn’t invented and created something called an earth power lodge imagine if you look at show number 78 in february of 2020 i did an interview with michael in fact as we’re talking i can bring up on screen to show you that in 19 where was it that’s not what we wanted

08:24
to show you what do we want to show look at all these pictures isn’t it amazing we have had all kinds of interesting experiences here this time setting up doing protocols for testing this uh regenegro which is isn’t this fun looking at uh these are videos going in the protocols that’s nile james you’re setting this is part of the soundtrack we are so excited about what we’re doing here we are going to find how to take greenways and uh through a process called hyrolysis where you call i call it

09:25
burning there’s no oxygen we’re able to raise the temperature as we do that we pull off phytochemicals [Music] where we can hold carbon in the soil and be able to grow better and hold more nutrients and grow more nutritious food and uh basically be working to save our planet show people how to regenerate soil where it takes nature three and four hundred years this process so that’s why we want to show it from here now just as i’m talking i’m telling you you see on um we have taken some video you’re going

10:25
to see a lot of in some of our upcoming shows and then to do with many of the people that are in these studies and we’re going to look at this whole thing and see what it is how it’s successful so far it has been on everybody’s lips that is hurting it is a very important thing because i think we all know if we don’t do something radical to shift what’s going on on our earth we only have 60 growing cycles left before we don’t have enough top soil to be able to grow the food for

10:59
the people and uh you know everything is in this age of biotech you know you can only do so much and replacing synthetically and uh so much doing it without repairing what we’ve already done and i think many of us would like to be able to plant in the earth and not do everything without earth and not do everything in an artificial way and here’s our chance to give to the next generation to be able to give them a chance to have what we have and what our fathers and grandfathers and grandmothers

11:37
had before us growing and natural soil and air that we can breathe anyway i think we should uh take a quick break we’ll be right back i want to give you and our audience a closer look i’m jason schwartz your host here at the neutral zone mauineutralzone.com on ka ku 88.5 fm the voice of maui akaku maui community media tv and most of us on the net you can find everything up at youtube you can also find it at our webpage mauineutralzone.com remember where the maui arts and music association

12:25
you are on radio can’t see it but on television you see or on we have video you can see our three logos behind us maui arts and music association mama and people aligned in positive action their logos behind that mask just sitting there and kermit the frog and then dream make this foundation the foundation to make dreams come true by taking a vision and putting it in action and we want to be an example we are an example to the world and we’re going to get better as we’re able to show important

13:01
technologies um i wanted to give you a quick look i’m going to share the screen this page is on maui arts and music dot org if you look at uh environment under the third program which is soil regeneration and green power this is a show i did number 78 in february of 2020 with michael smith that’s he came here and we got him in front of the council environmental committee real quick very fortunate fortuitous good timing this is showing a cycle of activity where there is no waste nothing goes into the air then

13:48
everything is used everything is what goes in and what come out can be balanced and used not only in the single system but in numbers of systems tied together through the programs and activities that have been created by michael smith you should see uh we’re gonna be doing another interview here soon and when we do you’ll be seeing it right here um we’re gonna show you a lot of the different pieces as we go along in the next number of weeks and months and show you so that all of maui can be

14:22
excited as this is uh we hope coming online and part of an agro-tourism eco-tourism trend we’ve been talking about it for 25 years we’re finally catching up and saying hey i have an idea let’s do this you know i remember when i was the green party candidate for mayor in 1994 and people thought i was radical now i laugh because the things that i was talking about and many of us were talking about were just ahead of the time and so i hope we can like i said i said to councilman mike molina when i do

15:01
interviews i put down the sword we don’t carry swords here we’re here to all work together we don’t need to place blame we don’t need any of that we need to help each other and to realize that through that we can save our world and if not we’re toast and if it isn’t in our generation the end of the world as we know it you know things keep changing and technology keeps changing but it would be nice if we could breathe natural air plant match natural produce and grow things naturally

15:38
as we’re destroying our atmosphere you know it’s almost hard to imagine that there are people that didn’t think that climate change is important enough to take care of no matter who caused it we know what’s causing it we’re eating up resources and eliminating waste in an irresponsible way we are raising all kinds of animals that uh leave out get rid of co2 all kinds of things going on that we just aren’t doing right it’s time for us to get it right anyway i am here i’m so happy to be with

16:18
you sometimes i don’t want to just keep rambling so i may put on some music and uh try to show you some other things here but i’ve just been very excited it’s been really good to see this feasibility study starting we know it works but the county can uh have this because this could also help us with our uh waste for the county we can help us with our waste all privately and make everything a sustainable loop to really help our island and we are better to show this kind of thing than

16:52
on the most remote land masses in the world these islands of hawaii [Music] [Applause] [Music] is [Music] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] is [Applause] [Music] this [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] hi we’re back i’m jason schwartz your host here at the neutral zone maui neutralzone.com is anything but neutral um today we have the same guest that we have all the time because i

20:10
think of myself as a guest jason schwartz except now i’m here alone i’ve been doing interviews of different people in visual art healing art music culture environment most recently i’ve been focusing on environment like you see this first segment was about me and michael smith and regenetech and soil regeneration and how to use our green waste to uh anyway it’s a whole great process and you’re going to see all these interviews and we’re going to have little clips of everything

20:45
mixed into the show on radio you won’t see it you’ll be maybe hearing something but the radio show isn’t as powerful as the the fact of what we’re doing regenetech is just super i just got off the phone in another area with john beatty in cooler these machines the thing that we need is ways to make them and we need people in the sciences or the college who want to become and involved in manufacturing to be involved and people that want to be involved in cutting edge and be able to learn about

21:26
this videotape it share it turn it into an industry here also the education of this thing is also an industry here for all of you to realize we have a college and all these creative arts we’re sending people away but we could do that kind of thing here it’ll take another step a step of integrating how people are paid some of it quote in trade but on an island and an island that wants to be self-sustainable with its people that’s a very powerful possibility that can become a reality it’s always a matter of what do you have

22:09
that is valuable to others you know and some things are valuable to others and they kind of drive the currency in the world you know united states style you know with all the stuff about the the what’s behind it and you know all that stuff well on an island we can create something that has value and make sense and can help our local people thrive and be self-sustainable and i you’ll see as we go that these are not new things these are things that are around the world i mean when i think

22:47
that in 1994 i think it was when i was running for mayor of maui green party right against linda lingle and goro hakama ricky hokama’s father who was 30 years on council remember anyway and um those were the good old days that’s when we were ahead of our time and now we’re just in time and i say we the ideas that i share are very common now and seem like matter of fact to so many some people don’t believe in climate change they label things in a way that they’re against or distant from the truth but if

23:29
what we do is based on helping each other and the goal is to make it work for everyone it’s amazing what can be done and what is being done then we’re going to share that and as we go we’ll be growing and you’ll be seeing more about regenetech about hawaii about hydrogen health hawaii and john beatty and his extraordinary hho machine you know people are buying these machines for hydrogen and making a glass at a time this is like you know a fire hose and not only that this is hhl which is especially powerful

24:08
especially when you can also change it to a state of hho plasma which is a whole exciting area in this world anyway the world has got a lot to see and share and we hope to do that with you and we’re in maui and that’s why we are the maui arts and music association this is the neutral zone mauineutralzone.com maui arts and music.org now we’re going to go back and talk more about regenetech and and um all the stuff about the environment stuff but just want to make sure that you know that there’s a lot that can happen

24:48
if you contact me contact us here through the website or by phone my phone number is easy to remember area 874-5900 here in maui hawaii but we’re an example to the world and want to involve the world and all we’re doing both in the promotion of things that are on maui imagine you’re a hotel and you have hotels all around the world including maui and you can showcase what you’re doing here and what’s going on on this island and you’re what you’re part of in generating new health retreats

25:28
and health packages and i say health packages the world knows about hydrogen they don’t really share with the united states in any way that the united states is easily receiving we have this block some say it’s for the good sometimes it is sometimes it slows down things that the world knows and in japan they call it shinuru i don’t know how to say it any other way i may not even get it right in china they know about it is it bad because the world knows about it and we blocking hydrogen can affect

26:08
virtually every disease known to man or reverse alzheimer’s this isn’t me speaking this is research that’s much supported there are people you’re going to see on this show i’m going to have an interview with tyler lebaron who’s the head of the molecular hydrogen institute and you’re going to see what he is there’s so much that you’re going to see that you’re going to say wow i’m sure glad we’re living until this age so i can see this i’m on the upper end of age compared to

26:46
some of you young people out there but this is all being done really to guide and help you save our planet and help we’re going to help but we’re not going to be around maybe 100 years now maybe biotech will let me live longer maybe who on what i am will still exist but maybe the body falls away who knows where the world is going in the area of virtual reality i’m really very excited about possibilities but i’m afraid it makes the humans less valuable except on a more sensitive touchy feely level

27:29
as machines can take over and do that kind of stuff our world is really shifting so much anyway i just took a little break here to um take a change of pace this shirt ariel got me i can’t even see but it has a big logo i like the shirt i’m not big on the logos so prominent but i’m very happy to be here with you and let’s go back once again let’s go and do this ready one two three so we’re back i wanted to show you the website i want to show you mountainmutualzone.com right now

28:43
uh a lot of words um um based house that means you can build your house where you couldn’t otherwise whether it’s in a desert or a rocky place systems that’s hydroxyhydrogen that’s the case chinese use to help the people in the hospital that go on ventilators get off the ventilator because hho is an anti-inflammatory and it can stop your alveoli so it was able to here in the united states we’re really just discovering how is good for hr specifically it um you imagine that 10 releasing all

31:20
your drums or increased energy or virtually every known you electrify water you create a different configuration and that is still hydrogen hydrogen efficiently now there’s a gentleman here who has a machine that’s incredibly tourism um but imagine if we also were showing how to live as i’m sitting here i’m realizing i am sitting in front of grow your own food really ohana gardens we had jenny caroline and uh we talked about food security hawaii there are some great programs going on here

33:34
that are great and models for the world but um that’s why we do the show because we want to share good things and we want to bring things that maybe you wouldn’t think go together and show how it’s all holistic it all looks and together it is really a great pleasure to be here with you sometimes more than ever to share with you great things i think i’m going to put on some music and shut me up for a little while i am going to share with you a song written by don gear in nineteen

34:22
i had a little something to do with it also when we went in the studio where i went in the studio and recorded it’s called stardust road let’s see listen [Music] when i lived out in the country we kept it all together until then [Music] was [Music] place oh foreign is i know is oh is [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] so oh that’s powerful he’s fearing that that was a lot of years ago we’re going to be doing shows recently that is such a beautiful thing to see why

40:18
and it’s very dynamic i remember when we wrote it they were thinking it at the time about ourselves but as coming on i thought to do it as a duet with really nelson and funny how he co-starred us in the song you all remember that um but stardust world’s a whole different experience we do our show on stardust lord if anyone can see we gave them we hope that all that we do is a memory to last forever with you and that you will join with us to try to make this better that’s all thank you for joining me here

41:06
today i uh filled up in another hour next week we’ll have another guest besides me i hope you have a good week hello this is jason schwartz from the neutral zone maui neutralzone.com uh here at kaku 88.5 fm the voice of maui akaku maui community media on the net on youtube you’ll find us all the time just look up maui maui neutral zone jason schwartz any of the guests you want to see you’re welcome put them in there but you can go to mauineutralzone.com and see our whole library put in the

41:48
name of any subject or person that uh might be on the show or if you’d like to see them on the show you can email us you can email us jason at mauineutralzone.com or you can also email us at teamaloha icloud.com you know that also is where you’ll find mauiartsandmusic.org all these names they all come together because we are all together and that’s what i like to be able to point out our motive isn’t profit our motive is organization and cooperation many of the programs you hear like

42:32
on many stations their main motive isn’t cooperation isn’t really an end product that is meant to serve everyone they put themselves first and that seems to be the way the world is living but on an island the idea of self-sustainability means everyone wins everyone contributes and everyone works in this balance everyone has something to contribute in this world even if it’s a good will in helping another something like that could really change the fabric of our everyday life for so many people including myself

43:16
including you anyway if you want to find us you know how to find us right mauineutralzone.com you can find us at youtube and just put in jason schwartz uh and maui and you’ll find a zillion things if you put in maui neutral you put in schwartz maui art music all that stuff will bring up us us is me and ariel and all the people that have been part of this contribution over the years to the maui arts and music association art music and the culture of our islands and educating people about environmental solutions that we can be

44:01
modeling self-sustainability to the world recently you’re seeing this project that i’m sharing with you this project from michael smith and diane carter regenetech the idea of soil regeneration by growing algae creating methane and hydrogen running a jet engine of sorts doing a process called pyrolysis no air but heating it up and then taking chemicals phytochemicals from the plants off and using them for other valuable ways and then the waste of that process is biochar so we use green waste to create

44:43
carbon holding additives to the soil that are made natural and have all natural things and this kind of thing is also a profit business so wow you can see it’s something that we want to showcase to the world because with the awareness that we need to save our planet it’s all of us that are going to make a difference by doing just that making the overture to save our planet and this is a really good way check out regenetech on the web check out us on the web mauiartsonmusic.org and maui neutral zone dot com

45:23
um anyway more to come more uh i’m gonna play a piece of music now you probably haven’t heard in a while maui stylin by um our friend lono now we know him as teaching ukulele and he’s been a hawaiian uh master teacher besides being a performer all these years based in molokai but way back when way back when i think it was third or fourth album he wrote a song that i thought was really a great song it might have been third out maui styling anyway enjoy it and we will see you again next time
